Office 2019 Home and Business for Mac: The Short Version
Microsoft Office 2019 Home and Business for Mac is a one-time-purchase license for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote on a single Mac. There is no subscription, no renewal date and no cloud requirement beyond a free Microsoft account to redeem the key. It is the lower-priced way to get the real desktop Office apps on an Intel Mac or a hand-me-down MacBook that will never see Microsoft 365, and it remains a solid choice as long as you understand that Microsoft's own support for it ended in October 2023.

What is Office 2019 for Mac and who should buy it?
Office 2019 was the perpetual release that arrived in September 2018, between the 2016 suite and the 2021 suite. On the Mac it came in two editions: Home and Student, which has Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and Home and Business, which adds Outlook. This listing is the Home and Business edition, so email, calendar and contacts in a proper desktop client are part of the package.
The buyer we see most often is someone with an Intel MacBook Pro or iMac from the 2015 to 2020 era. Those machines run macOS versions that current Office releases no longer target, but they still have years of life left for writing, spreadsheets and email. Office 2019 fits them exactly. We also sell a fair number of these keys to people who simply want the cheapest legitimate way to get Microsoft Office for Mac with Outlook, and to schools and small offices refreshing older Macs on a fixed budget. If your Mac is brand new and running the latest macOS, the Office 2021 Home and Business for Mac key is the better long-term fit, and we say so plainly below.
What is included in Office 2019 Home and Business for Mac?
You get five desktop applications: Word 2019, Excel 2019, PowerPoint 2019, Outlook 2019 and OneNote. Word 2019 brought the Focus Mode, Learning Tools and improved translation features to the Mac. Excel 2019 added new functions such as CONCAT, TEXTJOIN, IFS and SWITCH, along with funnel charts and 2D maps. PowerPoint 2019 introduced Morph transitions and Zoom for jumping between slides. Outlook 2019 for Mac supports Exchange, Outlook.com, Gmail, iCloud and IMAP accounts, with a focused inbox and a modern calendar.
As with every Office for Mac edition, Access and Publisher are not included because Microsoft never made them for macOS. If you compare the app list with the Windows suites in our Office 2019 category, that is the reason the Mac list is shorter. Documents saved in any of these apps open without conversion on Windows, iPad and the web versions.
How does Office 2019 for Mac compare with Office 2021 for Mac and Office 2016 for Mac?
All three are perpetual, one-Mac licenses with the same five apps. The differences are in processor support, macOS range and how long Microsoft kept fixing them.
| Feature | Office 2016 for Mac | Office 2019 for Mac | Office 2021 for Mac |
|---|
| Release | July 2015 | September 2018 | October 2021 |
| Microsoft support ended | October 13, 2020 | October 10, 2023 | October 13, 2026 |
| Processor | Intel only | Intel, runs on Apple silicon | Native Apple silicon and Intel |
| macOS at release | Yosemite 10.10 | Sierra 10.12 | Big Sur 11 |
| Apps | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote | Same | Same |
| Notable additions | Ribbon redesign, retina support | Morph, Focus Mode, new Excel functions | XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays, dark mode refinements |
| Best for | Very old Intel Macs | Intel Macs from 2015 to 2020 | Apple silicon and current macOS |
The short reading of that table is: match the Office generation to the age of your Mac. A 2017 iMac on High Sierra or Mojave is a textbook Office 2019 machine. A 2023 MacBook Air on the latest macOS should run Office 2021 or newer.
What are the system requirements for Office 2019 for Mac?
Office 2019 for Mac launched with macOS Sierra 10.12 as the minimum and followed Microsoft's usual rule of supporting the three most recent macOS versions while it was in support. Because support has ended, the final build is what you install, and it runs on a wide range of macOS versions in practice.
| Requirement | Office 2019 Home and Business for Mac |
|---|
| Operating system | macOS Sierra 10.12 or later at release; later builds required High Sierra, Mojave or newer |
| Processor | Intel Mac; also runs on Apple silicon Macs |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM |
| Storage | About 10 GB of free disk space |
| Display | 1280 x 800 or higher |
| Internet | Needed to download, redeem and activate |
| Account | Free Microsoft account for redemption |
Does it work on Apple silicon Macs?
Office 2019 for Mac was built for Intel processors. On an M1, M2 or M3 Mac it still installs and runs, either through Apple's Rosetta 2 translation layer or through the Universal builds Microsoft shipped as updates before support ended. Everyday work is fine. If you are buying a new Apple silicon Mac today, though, we recommend the 2021 edition, which was designed for that hardware and is still receiving security updates.
Retail, OEM or volume: which license is this?
This is a retail Home and Business license that redeems on Microsoft's public setup page and attaches to your Microsoft account. Office for Mac has no OEM channel, and volume licenses for Mac activate through a company's own tools rather than a consumer account. Retail is what you want for a personal or small-business Mac: it can be reinstalled on the same machine any number of times and moved to a replacement Mac you own after you remove it from the old one.
Once redeemed, the license lives in your Microsoft account under Services and subscriptions. Write down which account you used. Years from now, that login is the thing that gets Office 2019 back onto a freshly wiped Mac, not the original key.
How do I install and activate Office 2019 on a Mac?
- Find the OfficeGSM delivery email and copy the 25-character product key.
- Visit Microsoft's setup page (office.com/setup) and sign in with a Microsoft account you will keep.
- Enter the key, choose your country and language, and confirm. Office 2019 Home and Business for Mac now appears in your account.
- Click Install to download the installer package. It is roughly 2 GB, so allow some time on a slower connection.
- Double-click the .pkg file, agree to the installer prompts and enter your Mac login password.
- Open Word from Applications, click Sign in, and use the same Microsoft account. The other apps activate with it.
- Choose Help, then Check for Updates, and let Microsoft AutoUpdate bring the suite to its final 2019 build.
If you already have an old Office trial or a Microsoft 365 sign-in on the Mac, sign out of it first, otherwise the apps may keep pointing at the wrong license.
Why is an Office 2019 for Mac key this cheap, and is it legit?
Two things keep the price low. First, this is a previous-generation product; Microsoft no longer sells it directly and the market price of a legitimate key has come down accordingly. Second, we deliver by email, so there is no box, disc or shipping cost built in. The key itself is a genuine Microsoft retail key that redeems on Microsoft's own site and downloads from Microsoft's servers. We do not modify software, and we do not sell shared volume keys dressed up as retail. If a key fails to redeem and our support team cannot fix it, you receive a replacement or a refund.
Updates, support and lifecycle
Microsoft's support for Office 2019 for Mac ended on October 10, 2023. Mac perpetual editions receive five years of mainstream support and no extended phase, which is why the Mac date is earlier than the Windows Office 2019 date of October 2025. Since then, the apps still install, activate and run, and Microsoft AutoUpdate delivers the final build, but no new security patches are produced. For a home Mac that stays current on macOS updates and is used for documents, spreadsheets and personal email, plenty of people consider that a fair trade for the price. For a business handling sensitive client files, we would point you toward Office 2021 for Mac or a Microsoft 365 plan instead. Our own support does not expire; if you need help reinstalling next year, we are here.
Who buys Office 2019 for Mac and what else should you look at?
Typical orders come from owners of older Intel Macs, students on a budget, families adding Office to a second Mac, and anyone who prefers the classic Outlook desktop client over webmail. If your Mac is even older and stuck on a macOS before Sierra, Office 2016 Home and Business for Mac is the last edition that supports it. If you have a modern Apple silicon Mac, step up to the 2021 edition. For a Windows PC in the same household, Office 2019 Professional Plus is the matching Windows suite. Every Mac edition we carry is listed in our Office for Mac category, and the full range of one-time Microsoft Office licenses is one click further.
