Office 2016 Home and Business for Mac: The Short Version
Microsoft Office 2016 Home and Business for Mac is a one-time-purchase license for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote on a single Intel Mac. It is the edition to buy when your Mac is too old for anything newer, because it was written for OS X Yosemite, El Capitan and the macOS releases that followed, and it runs happily on hardware from the early 2010s that Apple stopped upgrading years ago. Microsoft ended support for it in October 2020, so this is a product for keeping a trusted older Mac useful, not for a new machine.

What is Office 2016 for Mac and who is it for?
Office 2016 for Mac was a big deal when it arrived in 2015. It replaced Office 2011, brought the ribbon in line with the Windows version, added full Retina display support and, for the first time, made Word, Excel and PowerPoint feel like the same programs on both platforms. The Home and Business edition is the one with Outlook, which is why it is the version small businesses and self-employed people picked then and still pick now for legacy machines.
Today the audience is specific. You have a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac or Mac mini from roughly 2009 to 2015, it runs Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra or High Sierra, and Apple will not offer it anything newer. The web apps feel cramped, Pages does not open your Word files perfectly, and you want the real Office. That is exactly the Mac this Office 2016 for Mac key is for. If your Mac can run Mojave or later, the Office 2019 Home and Business for Mac key costs only a little more and is a newer product, so please read the comparison below before deciding.
Which apps are included in Office 2016 Home and Business for Mac?
The suite installs Word 2016, Excel 2016, PowerPoint 2016, Outlook 2016 and OneNote. Word 2016 handles .docx files from any modern Office version and includes track changes, comments and a full styles engine. Excel 2016 has PivotTables, slicers, the analysis toolpak and a solid set of chart types; what it lacks are the dynamic array functions that came later. PowerPoint 2016 supports Presenter View, embedded video and animation painter. Outlook 2016 for Mac connects to Exchange, Outlook.com, Gmail, iCloud and IMAP or POP accounts and keeps mail, calendar, contacts and tasks in one window.
Access and Publisher are not included, and never have been on any Mac edition of Office. That is a platform fact, not a limitation of this key. If you need those two programs, a Windows edition from our Office 2016 category is the only route, either on a PC or inside a virtual machine.
How does Office 2016 for Mac compare with Office 2019 for Mac and Office 2016 for Windows?
Buyers tend to compare this key in two directions: against the next Mac edition, and against the Windows suite of the same year. The table covers both.
| Feature | Office 2016 for Mac | Office 2019 for Mac | Office 2016 Professional Plus (Windows) |
|---|
| Released | 2015 | September 2018 | September 2015 |
| Microsoft support ended | October 13, 2020 | October 10, 2023 | October 14, 2025 |
| Processor | Intel only | Intel, runs on Apple silicon | 32-bit and 64-bit x86 |
| Minimum OS at release | OS X Yosemite 10.10 | macOS Sierra 10.12 | Windows 7 SP1 |
| Apps | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote | Same five | Adds Access and Publisher |
| License | Retail, 1 Mac | Retail, 1 Mac | 1 PC |
| Best for | Macs on Yosemite to High Sierra | Macs on Mojave and newer | Windows PCs |
The honest guidance is this: if your Mac can run Mojave or newer, Office 2019 is the better buy for a very similar price. Office 2016 earns its place on Macs that cannot get there. The Windows column is there because many households have both a Mac and a PC and want the same generation of Office on each.
What are the system requirements for Office 2016 for Mac?
Office 2016 for Mac was designed for Intel processors and OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Later updates raised the minimum somewhat, but the product remained comfortable on the macOS versions of its time.
| Requirement | Office 2016 Home and Business for Mac |
|---|
| Operating system | OS X Yosemite 10.10 or later at release; El Capitan, Sierra and High Sierra all supported during its lifecycle |
| Processor | Intel processor (not built for Apple silicon) |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM |
| Storage | About 6 GB of free disk space |
| Display | 1280 x 800 or higher |
| Internet | Needed to download, redeem and activate |
| Account | Free Microsoft account for redemption |
What about Apple silicon and newer macOS?
Office 2016 for Mac is an Intel product and was never updated for M1, M2 or later chips. On an Apple silicon Mac it is not a supported configuration, and we do not sell it for that purpose. Likewise, on very recent macOS releases you may run into installer or stability issues that Microsoft will not address. For those machines, buy Office 2019 or Office 2021 for Mac instead. We would rather lose a sale than send you a key for a Mac it does not suit.
Retail, OEM or volume: which license is this?
This is a retail Home and Business license. It redeems on Microsoft's setup page, binds to your Microsoft account and lets you reinstall on the same Mac as often as needed. There is no OEM version of Office for Mac, and volume licenses for Mac are organizational products that are not meant for individual resale. A retail key also gives you the right to move the license to a replacement Mac you own, as long as you remove it from the old one first.
After redemption, Office 2016 Home and Business for Mac appears under Services and subscriptions in your Microsoft account, along with a fresh download link. Keep that account alive. It is the permanent proof of your license, and the way to reinstall long after the delivery email is lost.
How do I install and activate Office 2016 on a Mac?
- Copy the 25-character product key from the OfficeGSM email.
- Open Safari and go to Microsoft's setup page (office.com/setup). Sign in with a personal Microsoft account or create one.
- Paste the key, select your country and language, and confirm. The product is added to your account.
- Click Install to download the Office 2016 for Mac installer package.
- Run the .pkg file, accept the license terms and enter your Mac password when prompted.
- Open Word 2016 from Applications, click Sign in to activate, and use the same Microsoft account. All five apps activate together.
- From the Help menu choose Check for Updates and let Microsoft AutoUpdate install the final 2016 build.
The download is around 1.5 GB. On an older Mac with a spinning hard drive the installer can take ten minutes or so to finish, which is normal.
Why is an Office 2016 for Mac key this cheap, and is it legit?
It is cheap because it is a discontinued generation delivered by email with no box, disc or shipping, and because we source licenses in quantity. It is legit because the key is a genuine Microsoft retail key that redeems on Microsoft's own site and downloads from Microsoft's own servers. Nothing is patched or modified. If you search for an office 2016 product key you will find plenty of sites offering keys that stop working after a week; those are usually leaked volume keys. Ours is a retail key tied to your account, and if it does not redeem and our team cannot fix it, we replace it or refund you.
Updates, support and lifecycle
Microsoft's support for Office 2016 for Mac ended on October 13, 2020. The apps still install, activate and run, and Microsoft AutoUpdate still provides the last released build, but no security updates have been issued since. Microsoft also stopped guaranteeing that Outlook 2016 for Mac can connect to Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online mailboxes after that date; connections generally continue to work, but if your employer's mail server is on Microsoft 365, be aware of that. For personal Gmail, iCloud or IMAP mail this is not an issue. Our own support does not have an end date, and we will help you reinstall or reactivate whenever you need it.
Who buys Office 2016 for Mac and what else should you look at?
Typical customers are owners of 2009 to 2015 Macs, families keeping a spare MacBook in service for a student, and offices with a legacy iMac at reception that needs Word and Outlook and nothing more. If the Mac can run Mojave or newer, Office 2019 for Mac is our recommendation for a few dollars more. If you also have a Windows PC of the same vintage, Office 2016 Professional Plus is the Windows suite with Access and Publisher. Every Mac edition we carry sits in the Office for Mac category, and the complete list of one-time Office licenses is in the Microsoft Office section.
