Per-Core vs Server + CAL Licensing
SQL Server Standard can be licensed two ways, and the right choice depends on how many people use the database. Server + CAL means one server license plus a Client Access License for every user or device that connects. It is cheaper when a small, known group of people use the system. Per-core licensing covers the physical or virtual cores the instance runs on (sold in 2-core packs, minimum 4 cores per processor) and allows unlimited users. It is the right model for public-facing applications or large user counts. Enterprise is per-core only. Tell us your core count and user count and we will say plainly which is cheaper.
SQL Server 2022 vs 2019
SQL Server 2022 added Azure Synapse Link, Azure SQL Managed Instance link for disaster recovery, Query Store on by default, Intelligent Query Processing improvements, ledger tables, and contained availability groups. Mainstream support runs to January 2028 and extended support to January 2033. SQL Server 2019 remains widely deployed and certified by many software vendors; its extended support runs to January 2030. Unless your application vendor requires 2019 specifically, buy 2022.
