Exchange Server Licenses for Organizations That Keep Email In-House
Most of the world moved its mailboxes to Microsoft 365, and most of the world was right to. But a meaningful number of organizations still need Exchange running on their own hardware: firms with data-residency or regulatory requirements, businesses on sites with unreliable internet, companies with line-of-business systems bolted onto Exchange, and IT teams who simply want to own their mail. For them, this category sells genuine Exchange Server license keys for Exchange Server 2019 and Exchange Server 2016, in Standard and Enterprise editions, as one-time purchases delivered by email.
Exchange is licensed in two layers and it is worth understanding both before buying. The server license (this category) licenses the Exchange software on a server. The Client Access Licenses license each user or device that connects to it. Standard and Enterprise server editions differ only in scale: Standard supports up to five mailbox databases per server, Enterprise up to one hundred. The features are otherwise identical, which is why Standard covers the great majority of small and medium deployments.
Standard vs Enterprise Edition
| Exchange Server Standard | Exchange Server Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|
| Mailbox databases per server | Up to 5 | Up to 100 |
| Feature set | Full | Full (identical) |
| Database availability groups | Yes | Yes |
| Typical deployment | Single site, up to a few hundred mailboxes | Large multi-database, multi-site environments |
| CALs required | Standard CAL per user/device; Enterprise CAL adds compliance and advanced features | Same |
Note that the edition of the server and the edition of the CAL are independent. You can run Exchange Server Standard with Enterprise CALs if you want features like In-Place Hold, data loss prevention and unified messaging integration for your users.
Exchange 2019 vs Exchange 2016, and What Comes Next
Exchange Server 2019 runs on Windows Server 2019 and 2022, uses the MetaCache Database for faster search on SSD-backed storage, supports up to 48 cores and 256 GB of RAM per server, and is the version to install for any new on-premises deployment. Exchange Server 2016 remains in place in many organizations and its license is still available for expanding or rebuilding those environments. Microsoft ended support for both 2016 and 2019 in October 2025 and has replaced them with Exchange Server Subscription Edition, which is an in-place upgrade from 2019. If you are building new, buy 2019 and plan the SE upgrade; if you are maintaining an existing 2016 environment, we can supply the matching key.

Buyer questions
Standard or Enterprise edition?
Standard for up to five mailbox databases per server, which covers most small and mid-sized organizations. Enterprise when you need more databases on one server. Features are identical.
Do I still need CALs?
Yes. Each user or device connecting to Exchange needs a Standard CAL; an Enterprise CAL adds compliance and advanced features on top.
Does Exchange 2019 still activate?
Yes. The product key is entered into the server and licenses it permanently; there is no online activation dependency.
Can I upgrade Exchange 2019 to Subscription Edition later?
Yes. Exchange Server SE is delivered as an in-place upgrade from Exchange 2019, which is one reason 2019 is the right version for a new install today.
Is this a subscription?
No. It is the perpetual server license for the version stated.
How fast is delivery?
