Windows Server 2008 R2 has been out of support since January 2020 and its Extended Security Updates ended in January 2023. It is, by any measure, a legacy operating system. It is also still running critical workloads in more places than anyone likes to admit: an old Exchange 2010 server nobody has migrated, a SQL Server 2008 database behind a custom application, a print server for a plant floor, a licensing server for an engineering package that only speaks to 2008 R2. 2008 R2 is 64-bit only; the original Windows Server 2008 also shipped in 32-bit. The two versions use different keys, so tell us which installation media you have.

- Do not expose it to the internet or use it for general file sharing.
- Consider virtualizing it. A 2008 R2 VM on a modern Hyper-V or VMware host is easier to back up, snapshot and eventually retire than aging physical hardware.
