Note that 2012 R2 predates per-core licensing: Standard and Datacenter are licensed per pair of processors, and the two editions have identical features. Datacenter's only advantage is unlimited virtualization rights.

- Keep it off the open internet. Put it on its own VLAN or behind a firewall that only allows the traffic the application needs.
- Do not use it for browsing, email or file sharing beyond the legacy application.
- Take regular backups and test a restore. Old hardware fails and old software is hard to reinstall.
- Plan the migration. Windows Server 2025 upgrades in place from 2012 R2, which is the cleanest exit.
