Access 2024 Lifetime License: The Short Version

Microsoft Access 2024 is the standalone, one-time-purchase version of Microsoft's desktop database program for one Windows PC. You get the full Access application, with tables, queries, forms, reports, macros and VBA, as a perpetual license supported by Microsoft until October 2029. The key redeems through your Microsoft account, the installer comes straight from Microsoft, and there is no subscription attached. It is the product for people who need Access and only Access, or who already own a suite without it.

What is Microsoft Access 2024 and who is it for?

Access is the database program in the Office family. Where Excel stores data in a grid, Access stores it in related tables and lets you build forms for entering records, queries for pulling them back out, and reports for printing them. It has been the go-to tool for small-business inventory systems, club membership lists, lab sample tracking, and the thousands of departmental applications that grew out of a spreadsheet that got too big. Microsoft Access 2024 is the current perpetual release of that program.

The typical buyer of the standalone app falls into one of a few groups. Someone who owns Office Home and Business or Home and Student, which never include Access, and now needs it. A developer or consultant who builds Access front ends for clients and wants a clean single-app install. A company that standardized on a suite without Access for most staff but needs it on two or three machines. And people maintaining a legacy .accdb application that the business still depends on, who want a supported version to run it in for the next five years.

Is Microsoft Access going away?

No. This is one of the most searched questions about the product, so it deserves a plain answer. Microsoft included Access in the Office 2024 perpetual release, continues to ship it in Microsoft 365 Apps, and has published no retirement date. The confusion usually comes from two places: Publisher, a different Office program, is being retired in 2026, and Access web apps and Access Data Projects were discontinued years ago. The desktop Access application that opens .accdb files is alive, receives monthly updates, and is supported through October 2029 in this 2024 version. Buying it today is not a bet on a dying product.

How does Access 2024 compare with the suite, the Runtime and Microsoft 365?

Access is available in several ways, and picking the right one saves money. In our store the full Office 2024 Professional Plus suite, which includes Access, is often priced below the standalone app, so compare before you decide.

Full version or Runtime?

The free Access Runtime lets a colleague open a database you built, use its forms and print its reports, but not change the design or see the Navigation Pane. It is the right tool for the ten people who enter orders. The full Access 2024 license is for the person who builds and maintains the database. A common setup is one full license on the developer's machine and Runtime everywhere else.

What is new in Access 2024?

Access 2024 collects the improvements Microsoft added to the Microsoft 365 version between 2021 and 2024. The Web Browser control is now based on Microsoft Edge, so embedded web content in forms works with modern sites. The interface follows the Windows 11 visual refresh. There are stability and performance fixes for large tables, improvements to the query designer, and updated ODBC and SQL Server linking. Core capabilities that Access users rely on are unchanged: 2 GB database files, linked tables to SQL Server, SharePoint and other sources, VBA, the Large Number data type, modern charts, and the Dependencies and Database Documenter tools. If you are coming from Access 2016 or 2019, everything you know still works, and .accdb files open without conversion.

32-bit or 64-bit Access?

Microsoft installs 64-bit by default, and for a new database that is the right choice. The one reason to pick 32-bit is an existing application that depends on 32-bit ActiveX controls, 32-bit ODBC drivers or old VBA API declarations without PtrSafe. If you inherit such a database, install 32-bit Access 2024 with the same key; the bit version is chosen on the download page, not by the license. You cannot mix 32-bit and 64-bit Office apps on one PC, so match whatever Office you already have installed.

Retail, OEM or volume: which license is this?

This is a retail license. It redeems on Microsoft's setup page, lives in your Microsoft account under Services and subscriptions, reinstalls on the same PC as often as needed, and can be transferred to a replacement PC you own. There is no OEM Access. Volume editions activate through an organization's key management server and are not meant to be sold one key at a time; a suspiciously cheap Access key labeled MAK or KMS is one of those. Retail means the license is yours and provable through your own account.

Keep the Microsoft account you redeem with. Access 2024 reinstalls from that account rather than from the 25-character key, and if you are installing on a work PC, use a personal account or one your business controls, never a departing employee's login.

How do I install and activate Access 2024?

  1. Copy the 25-character product key from the OfficeGSM delivery email.
  2. Sign in at Microsoft's redemption page (office.com/setup) with your Microsoft account.
  3. Paste the key, choose country and language, and confirm. Access 2024 appears in your account.
  4. Click Install, choose 64-bit or 32-bit to match any Office already on the PC, and run the setup file.
  5. Let the Click-to-Run installer download and install Access; expect five to ten minutes.
  6. Open Access, sign in with the same Microsoft account, and accept the license terms.
  7. Confirm under File, Account that it reads Product Activated, Microsoft Access 2024.

If a Microsoft 365 trial or an older Office is on the PC, remove it first, unless it is the same 2024 generation and the same bit version. The installer will refuse to mix a 32-bit suite with 64-bit Access, and vice versa.

Why is an Access 2024 key this cheap, and is it legit?

The key is a genuine Microsoft retail key. It redeems on Microsoft's website and Access downloads from Microsoft's servers, so nothing passes through our hands except the license itself. Our price is below the retail box because we source in volume and deliver by email, with no packaging or shipping cost. We also point out, because it is true, that the full Office 2024 Professional Plus suite in our store often costs less than this single app; buy Access alone when a lean single-app install is what you want. If a key does not activate and our support team cannot fix it, we replace it or refund you.

Updates, support and lifecycle

Access 2024 is supported by Microsoft until October 9, 2029, with monthly security and quality updates delivered through the Office updater (File, Account, Update Options). New features are not added to perpetual releases, which many database developers consider a feature in itself: the environment your application runs in stays stable for five years. After October 2029 the program continues to open and run your databases and remains activated, but no further patches arrive. Our own support does not have a cut-off date, so reinstall and activation help will still be available.

Who buys Access 2024 and what else should you look at?

Our Access customers are small-business owners running an inventory or invoicing database, independent developers, and IT departments adding Access to a few machines in an office otherwise on a suite without it. If you need the other apps too, Office 2024 Professional Plus is the obvious alternative. If your PC still runs an older generation, Office 2021 Professional Plus includes Access 2021. Every Access license we carry is listed under Access licenses, alongside the rest of our single-app Office products.

Frequently asked questions about Microsoft Access 2024 – Lifetime License

How do I activate Microsoft Access 2024 with the key you send?
You redeem the 25-character key at Microsoft's setup page using your Microsoft account, install Access from that account, and sign in once inside Access to activate. The email from OfficeGSM contains the key, the redemption link and the steps. Sign in at the redemption page, paste the key, choose your country and language, and confirm. Access 2024 then appears under Services and subscriptions with an Install button. Download the setup file, run it, and the Click-to-Run installer fetches Access from Microsoft. Open Access when it finishes, sign in with the same account, and check File, then Account; it should read Product Activated, Microsoft Access 2024. The key is never typed into Access itself. If Access reports that your account has no license, you have most likely signed in with a different account, often a work or school login that the browser autofilled. Sign out inside Access and sign back in with the account you redeemed with. If you see an error code such as 0x80070005 or a message about a conflicting Office installation, note the exact text; these usually point to leftovers from a previous Office and are quick to resolve. Our support team is available around the clock and will guide you through it with your order number.
How many PCs can I install Access 2024 on with one license?
One license covers Access 2024 on one Windows PC. It is a single-device perpetual license, so a workstation and a laptop need two keys. The first PC you sign in on after redemption becomes the licensed device, and Access on a second PC signed in with the same account opens in reduced-functionality mode. If you need Access on several machines, buy one key per PC and redeem them all into the same Microsoft account; each computer then signs in and activates on its own. For a whole team, a Microsoft 365 Apps for business plan may work out simpler, and we will say so if you describe the setup. There is a helpful exception to the one-PC rule: transfer. When you retire a computer, uninstall Access there, install it on the replacement from your account and sign in, and the license moves with you. Also remember that not everyone who uses your database needs a full license. The free Access Runtime from Microsoft lets other people open and use a finished database without design tools, so a typical small office has one full Access 2024 license for the person who builds the application and Runtime on the machines of the people who enter data.
Does Access 2024 run on Windows 10 and Windows 11, and should I install 32-bit or 64-bit?
Access 2024 runs on both Windows 10 and Windows 11, and 64-bit is the correct choice unless you have a legacy database that requires 32-bit components. Windows 11 is the recommended platform. Windows 10 still installs and runs Access 2024 without complaint, but the operating system itself left Microsoft support in October 2025, so plan an upgrade if you have not already. On the bit version, Microsoft installs 64-bit by default and it handles large recordsets and memory better. Choose 32-bit only when the database depends on 32-bit ActiveX controls, 32-bit ODBC drivers with no 64-bit equivalent, or VBA API declarations that were never updated with PtrSafe. Many older departmental applications fall into that category, and installing 32-bit Access 2024 is the quickest way to keep them running. The key is identical for both; you pick the bit version on the download page in your Microsoft account. One firm rule: all Office apps on a PC must share the same bit version. If Word and Excel are 64-bit, Access must be too, and the installer will stop you otherwise. Check what you have under File, Account, About in any Office app before you download. If you are unsure which bit version an inherited database needs, start with 64-bit and switch only if a control or driver fails to load.
Do I need a Microsoft account for Access 2024, and can I use a business account?
Yes, a Microsoft account is required to redeem and activate Access 2024, and for a business PC we recommend an account that the business controls rather than an individual employee's personal login. The account is where Microsoft records the license and where you return to reinstall. For a home user, an existing personal account used for Windows, OneDrive or Xbox is ideal. For a company, a personal Microsoft account created with a company mailbox, such as licenses at your domain, keeps the license with the business when staff change. What does not work well is a work or school account managed through Microsoft 365 or Entra ID; those accounts are tied to organizational licensing, consumer product keys often fail to redeem there, and the license can end up where nobody can manage it. Set up recovery options on whichever account you use, since a forgotten login is the main way people lose access to a perpetual license. After activation, Access itself does not need to be online to open and edit databases; the account is verified in the background when the PC has a connection. If the key is for a client or a colleague, redeem it in their account so they own the license outright.
Is this Access 2024 key retail, OEM or volume, and why does it matter?
It is a retail key, which is the type an individual or small business should own. Retail means the key redeems on Microsoft's public setup page, the license is stored in your Microsoft account, you may reinstall on the same PC without limit, and you may move the license to a replacement PC after removing it from the old one. OEM licensing does not apply to Access as a standalone product; OEM is for Windows and Office preinstalled by a hardware maker, and it stays with that hardware. Volume licensing is how organizations buy hundreds of seats and activate them through a Key Management Service or a Multiple Activation Key. Individual keys pulled from those agreements and sold cheaply online are the ones that stop working when Microsoft audits activations, leaving the buyer with an unlicensed program and no recourse. If you see Access 2024 advertised for a couple of dollars with words like MAK or KMS in the listing, that is what it is. What we sell is retail. The practical benefit is independence: no administrator can revoke the license, no reseller retains any hold on it, and your account is the permanent proof of ownership. It is also the only kind of key our replacement or refund guarantee stands behind.
Can I move Access 2024 to a new PC or reactivate it after replacing the motherboard?
Yes, a retail Access 2024 license can be moved to a new PC or reactivated after a major hardware change, provided it is active on only one PC at a time. Office licenses attach to your Microsoft account rather than to the motherboard, so this is more straightforward than reactivating Windows. To move to a new computer, uninstall Access on the old one or wipe it, then on the new PC sign in to your Microsoft account, open Services and subscriptions, click Install next to Access 2024 and sign in when Access starts. Activation usually completes immediately. After a motherboard swap or a clean Windows install on the same machine, the steps are the same: reinstall from your account and sign in. If Microsoft's servers still hold the old device record, you may see a message that the license is in use; signing out on the old device, if it still exists, and trying again after a few minutes clears it. If the old hardware is gone, contact our support team with your order number and we will help release the activation. Your databases are ordinary files, so copy your .accdb files and any linked back-end databases to the new machine as part of the move.
Should I buy Access 2024 alone or the Office 2024 Professional Plus suite that includes it?
Buy the standalone Access 2024 if you want a single lean application or already own a suite without Access; buy Office 2024 Professional Plus if you need any of the other apps, and compare prices first, because in our store the suite is often the cheaper option. The Access inside Professional Plus is identical to the standalone Access 2024, with the same features, the same 2029 support date and the same one-PC license. So the decision is about what else lands on the machine. A developer who wants a clean test environment with only Access, or a company adding Access to workstations that already have Office Home and Business installed, has a good reason to buy the single app; installing a second suite over an existing one is messy, and the standalone installer slots Access in alongside the apps already there, provided the bit versions match. Everyone else is usually better served by the suite. It brings Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote along with Access for one price, which is hard to argue with. We list both so you can pick what fits, and our support team will happily tell you which one makes sense if you describe your setup.
What is the difference between Access 2024 and the free Access Runtime?
The full Access 2024 license lets you design and build databases; the free Access Runtime only lets people open and use a database someone else built. In Runtime, the Navigation Pane, design views, the ribbon's design tabs and the VBA editor are all hidden. Users can open forms, enter and edit records, run queries that are wired to buttons, and print reports, but they cannot create a new table, change a query or see the code. Microsoft provides the Runtime free of charge specifically so developers can distribute Access applications without buying a full license for every user. That shapes the typical purchase. The person who builds and maintains the database needs Access 2024. The five or fifty people who use it day to day need only the Runtime, which is installed from Microsoft's download page and matches the current Microsoft 365 Access build. Both open the same .accdb files, so nothing is converted. There is one caveat: the Runtime hides errors rather than showing debugging dialogs, so a developer will always want the full version for testing. If your situation is a single person building and using their own database, the full license is the one you need, and Runtime never enters the picture.
Is Microsoft Access going away, and is it safe to invest in Access 2024?
No, Microsoft Access is not going away; it is included in Office 2024, ships in Microsoft 365 Apps, receives monthly updates, and has no announced retirement date. The question comes up constantly, so it is worth explaining where the worry comes from. Microsoft did discontinue Access web apps and Access Services in SharePoint several years ago, and it announced that Publisher, a different program in the Office family, is being retired in 2026. Neither of those affects the desktop Access application that opens .accdb files. Microsoft has publicly stated its commitment to continuing Access, and shipping it in a new perpetual release with support to October 2029 is about as concrete as a commitment gets. Is it wise to build on it? For departmental databases, small-business systems and front ends to SQL Server, Access remains one of the fastest ways to get a working application with forms and reports, and millions of such applications are in daily use. For a public-facing web application or a system with hundreds of simultaneous users, Access was never the right tool, and that has not changed. Buying Access 2024 to run or maintain an existing database, or to build a new one for a small team, is a sound decision.
How long does delivery take, and what does the Access 2024 email contain?
Delivery is by email and normally arrives within minutes of a confirmed payment. The message from OfficeGSM includes your 25-character Access 2024 product key, a link to Microsoft's redemption page, a download link and step-by-step instructions for Windows. Nothing is shipped physically; there is no box, disc or USB stick, and that is part of why the price is lower than the retail package. If the email is not in your inbox after about ten minutes, check the spam or junk folder and, in Gmail, the Promotions tab. Then confirm that the email address on your order is spelled correctly, since a typo there is the most common reason a key seems to go missing. If it still has not arrived, contact our support team with your order number and we will resend it to the address you confirm. Orders placed overnight or at weekends are handled automatically in exactly the same way, and our support desk is staffed around the clock. We suggest saving the email or storing the key in a password manager as a receipt, though once the key is redeemed, your Microsoft account holds the license and reinstalling never requires the key again. Please quote the order number in any message so we can locate your key straight away.
What if the Access 2024 key is rejected as invalid or already used?
Contact our support team with your order number and a screenshot, and if we cannot get the key to redeem we replace it or refund you. First, a few checks clear up most rejections. Confirm you are on Microsoft's official setup page and not a lookalike. Paste the key rather than typing it; B and 8, O and 0, and I and 1 are easy to confuse. Check the account shown at the top right of the page, because browsers frequently autofill a work or school account, and those reject consumer keys with an unhelpful message. If the page says the key was already redeemed, look at Services and subscriptions in your account; it is common to have succeeded on an earlier attempt without realizing it, and if Access 2024 is listed there, all that remains is clicking Install. Also make sure you are not entering a key from another product you bought at the same time, such as a Windows key or a suite key. If the error persists, send us the exact text. We verify the key against our records and issue a replacement if it is faulty. There is no waiting period and no debate about it; a key that does not work is our responsibility under the guarantee.
Will Access 2024 receive updates, and what happens after support ends in 2029?
Access 2024 receives monthly security and quality updates from Microsoft until October 9, 2029, and after that it keeps working and stays activated but stops receiving patches. Updates arrive through the Office updater, either automatically or on demand from File, Account, Update Options, Update Now. They fix bugs and security issues; they do not add features, because the feature set of a perpetual release is fixed. For database developers that stability is valuable: the environment your application runs in will not change under you for five years, and a form that works today will work the same way in 2028. When support ends, nothing is switched off. Your license remains valid, activation continues, your databases open, and you can still reinstall from your Microsoft account. The only difference is that any new security flaw found in the 2024 code will not be fixed. If your database holds sensitive data or the PC is exposed to untrusted files, plan to move to the next perpetual release or to Microsoft 365 before that date. For an internal tool on a well-maintained PC, many organizations run out the clock and beyond. Our own support for reinstalls and activation questions does not end in 2029.
Can I use the Access 2024 key in another language or from outside the United States?
Yes, the key is multilingual and can be redeemed from most countries, and the language you pick at redemption is not permanent. When you redeem at Microsoft's setup page you choose a country and a language; Access installs in that language, and you can add or switch display languages afterward through File, Options, Language, or by installing an Office language pack. Retail Office keys are not region-locked in the way some digital game codes are. We have customers redeeming successfully across North America, Europe, Australia and elsewhere, and the license behaves identically wherever it is used. Select the country you actually live in during redemption so that Microsoft's account settings match your location. If you relocate later, the license follows your Microsoft account and nothing needs to change. Date, number and currency formats inside your databases follow the Windows regional settings on the PC rather than the license, so a database built in the United States opens correctly on a German PC with German formats, and vice versa. In the rare case that the redemption page reports a region-related error, send our support team a screenshot and we will investigate and replace the key if it turns out to be the cause.
Can Access 2024 open my old .mdb or Access 2010 databases, and can it run alongside an older Access?
Access 2024 opens .accdb files from Access 2007 onward without conversion and opens .mdb files from Access 2000 through 2003, though a few very old features are no longer supported; running it side by side with an older Access on the same PC is possible but we advise against it. On file formats, an Access 2010, 2013, 2016 or 2019 database opens as-is. Access 2000 and 2002-2003 format .mdb files open too, and you can keep working in them or convert to .accdb to gain features such as attachments and calculated fields. Access 97 and earlier .mdb files cannot be opened directly; they must first be converted in an intermediate version. Access Data Projects (.adp) are not supported at all. On coexistence, Windows permits an older MSI-based Access such as 2010 to sit next to a Click-to-Run Access 2024, but every time you switch between them Windows reconfigures file associations and registry settings, which is slow and prone to errors. Two Click-to-Run versions, such as Access 2016 or 2019 alongside 2024, are not allowed by the installer. The cleaner path is to back up your databases, uninstall the old Access and let 2024 take over. Our support team can talk you through the order of operations before you start.
