Before you start
Five minutes here prevents the one error people write to us about.
- The PC must be on Windows 10 Home. Check Settings, System, About. One already on Pro needs a different product.
- Install pending updates first. Home will not change edition on out of date servicing files.
- Nothing is erased. Files, programs and accounts stay put.
- You need a connection. The key cannot be verified offline.
- Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. No further security updates. Worth weighing before you start.
| Requirement | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Current edition | Windows 10 Home, any version |
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster, 64-bit or 32-bit |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM for 64-bit, 1 GB for 32-bit |
| Storage | A few GB free for the edition change |
| Connection | Internet access while the key is verified |
| Account | A Microsoft account is optional but recommended |
Download nothing: get the PC ready instead
This upgrade has no installer, which surprises people who expect a Windows 10 Pro download. Four checks replace it.
- Check which edition you are on. Settings, System, About. The Windows specifications box names the edition. This only runs from Windows 10 Home.
- Install everything in Windows Update. Home needs current servicing files before it will change edition. Skipping this causes most 0xC004F050 reports.
- Restart once, then have your key open. The 25 character key is in your order email and in your account on our site.
- Only download media if Windows 10 is not installed yet. microsoft.com/software-download/windows10 has the Media Creation Tool and the ISO for a fresh machine.

Run the Windows 10 Home to Pro edition change
The whole upgrade, from one page of Settings.
- Open Settings, Update and Security, Activation. Windows 10 keeps activation here, not under System where Windows 11 moved it.
- Find Upgrade your edition of Windows. Click Change product key inside that section, not the Change product key under Activation state.
- Type the key and click Next. Windows checks it against Microsoft, which takes a few seconds and needs a connection.
- Click Start the upgrade. The screen goes to a progress bar and the PC restarts once. Give it ten to twenty minutes.
- Sign back in as Windows 10 Pro. Your files, programs, printers and user accounts are exactly where you left them.
Use the Change product key inside Upgrade your edition of Windows. The similar button under Activation state activates the edition you already have, and a Pro key entered there from Home is the usual cause of 0xC004F050.
Activate Windows 10 Pro and tie it to your account
Usually already done by the time you sign back in, but worth confirming.
- Reopen Settings, Update and Security, Activation. In most cases activation has already happened during the restart.
- If it says not activated, enter the key again. Use Change product key under Activation state this time, since the edition is now Pro.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account. Windows ties a digital license to that account, so the troubleshooter can restore it after a hardware change.
- Fall back to phone activation if needed. Press the Windows key and R, type slui 4, and follow the prompts to read a Confirmation ID.
Our Confirmation ID walkthrough shows the phone activation screens, and we are on the phone Monday to Friday if you would rather read the numbers out with someone.
Check that it worked
Open Settings, System, About and then the Activation page. Three signs it worked.
- The edition reads Windows 10 Pro. Under Windows specifications, where it used to say Home.
- Activation state reads Active. With a digital license, linked to your Microsoft account if you signed in.
- The Pro features appear. BitLocker shows up in Control Panel and Remote Desktop can be switched on in Settings.
Common errors and how to fix them
Five things go wrong here, and the first accounts for most of them.
0xC004F050: the product key is not valid
Nine times out of ten this is a Home installation that has not been updated, or the key typed into the wrong box. Install everything waiting in Windows Update, restart, and use the Change product key under Upgrade your edition of Windows rather than the one under Activation state. Retype the key by hand instead of pasting, since a trailing space is easy to copy in. Confirm too that Settings, System, About really says Home.
0x803FA067: Windows could not be upgraded
The edition change began and stopped, normally because a pending update is half applied. Install everything in Windows Update, restart, then try again. If it still stops, run Settings, Update and Security, Troubleshoot, Additional troubleshooters, Windows Update, restart once more and retry. If Home will not move at all, email us and we send a generic upgrade key that pushes the edition across, after which your own key activates it.
0xC004C003: the activation server says the key is blocked
The server refuses the key, normally because it has already been activated on another machine. Nothing on the PC fixes it and reinstalling does not help. Check the key character by character against your order email, then email contact@officegsm.com with your order number. We look it up and send a replacement, and the 180-day guarantee covers a refund if we cannot get you activated.
0xC004F074: Windows cannot reach the activation servers
The connection rather than the key. Confirm the PC is online, then check the date, time and time zone, because a clock that is days out breaks the secure handshake. Pause any VPN or proxy and try Activate again. Leftover KMS settings from a work image cause it too. If it keeps failing, press the Windows key and R, type slui 4 and follow our Confirmation ID guide.
The edition changed but Windows still says not activated
This is normal and usually sorts itself out. The edition switch and the activation are two separate calls to Microsoft, and the second sometimes lands a few minutes later. Give it ten minutes on a live connection, then open Settings, Update and Security, Activation and click Change product key under Activation state, entering the same key again. If it still will not settle, run the Activation troubleshooter on the same page.
Windows 10 Home to Pro upgrade questions
What customers ask us most before they start.
How do I upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro without losing my files?
The upgrade is an edition change, not a reinstall, so nothing is erased and there is no installer to download. Open Settings, Update and Security, Activation, expand Upgrade your edition of Windows, click Change product key and enter your key. Windows verifies it, applies the change and restarts once. Documents, photos, installed programs, printers and every user account come back exactly as they were. Allow ten to twenty minutes in total, and make sure the PC is online, because the key cannot be checked offline.
What does Windows 10 Pro give me that Home does not?
The features Home leaves out are mostly about control and security. BitLocker drive encryption, Remote Desktop so you can connect to this PC rather than only out from it, joining a company domain or Azure AD, Group Policy for locking settings down, Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox for virtual machines, and assigned access for kiosk mode. Pro also addresses far more memory than Home. For a home PC that never leaves the house, none of that may matter. For work or study machines it usually does.
Will this key also work on a clean install of Windows 10 Pro?
Yes. The key is a Windows 10 Pro key, so it activates Pro whether you reach that edition by changing from Home or by installing from scratch. If you do install from scratch, take the Media Creation Tool or the ISO from microsoft.com/software-download/windows10, choose Windows 10 Pro on the edition list during setup, then enter your key on the Activation page afterwards. Most people never need to do that, because the in-place edition change is quicker and keeps everything where it is.
Windows 10 support ended. Should I still upgrade to Pro?
Windows 10 stopped receiving security updates on October 14, 2025, so this is worth a thought. Upgrading to Pro still makes sense if the PC cannot meet the Windows 11 requirements, if it runs software with no Windows 11 build, or if you need BitLocker and Remote Desktop on a machine you are keeping as it is. If the hardware does qualify, moving to Windows 11 Pro puts you back on a version that is still patched, and the steps are almost identical.
