How to download, install and activate Windows Server 2022 Standard

The Windows Server 2022 download is a free ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center. Install Standard from it, then put your key in to turn the 180-day evaluation into a licensed server without reinstalling anything. A fresh build takes 30 to 60 minutes, and converting a running server takes about ten.

Before you start

Have these ready and the whole job is one sitting.

  • Your license key. Twenty-five characters, emailed in minutes and kept in your account.
  • Standard, not Datacenter. The edition you install has to match the key you hold.
  • Your physical core count. Licensing counts cores, with a minimum of 16 per server.
  • Boot media or a hypervisor. An empty 8 GB USB drive, or Hyper-V, VMware or Proxmox.
  • A backup. A clean install erases the disk you select.
RequirementMinimum
Processor1.4 GHz 64-bit (x64) with NX, DEP, CMPXCHG16b, SSE4.2 and POPCNT support
Memory512 MB for Server Core, 2 GB for Desktop Experience
Disk space32 GB, and more once roles, data and updates are on it

FirmwareUEFI with Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 for the secured-core features
Step 1

Download the Windows Server 2022 ISO

Microsoft still publishes the media at no cost. One image carries Standard and Datacenter, and each installs as Server Core, which has no graphical interface, or Desktop Experience, which gives you the familiar desktop.

  1. Open the Windows Server 2022 page at the Evaluation Center. The button above takes you there directly.
  2. Choose the ISO. The VHD and Azure downloads on the same page are for other purposes.
  3. Complete the registration form. Name, company, email, phone and country, then the file starts.
  4. Pick your language. The server installs in the language you choose here.
  5. Keep the ISO. You will want it again the next time you rebuild.

Check you are on the Windows Server 2022 page and not the 2025 one. The two sit side by side, and a 2025 install will not accept a 2022 key.

Step 2

Install Windows Server 2022 Standard

Setup asks few questions. The edition screen is the one to read carefully.

  1. Make bootable media or mount the ISO. An 8 GB USB drive for a physical server, a virtual DVD for a guest.
  2. Boot the server from it. Use the boot menu key if the server goes past the media.
  3. Set language, time and keyboard, then choose Install now. Windows Server 2022 setup opens with those three.
  4. Choose Windows Server 2022 Standard. Desktop Experience for the full desktop, or the plain entry for Server Core. Datacenter will not take this key.
  5. Accept the terms, choose Custom and select the disk. Setup copies files and restarts once or twice.
  6. Set the Administrator password. On evaluation media the server now has 180 days on the clock.

Desktop Experience is the safer pick unless you are comfortable managing a server entirely through PowerShell or Windows Admin Center.

Step 3

Activate Windows Server 2022 with your key

Evaluation media has to be converted with DISM. Other media simply takes the key, through slmgr or the Activation page in Settings.

  1. Open an administrator command prompt. Command Prompt or PowerShell, started with Run as administrator.
  2. See which edition is installed. Run DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition. ServerStandardEval means you have evaluation media.
  3. Check the available targets. Run DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions and look for ServerStandard.
  4. Convert the evaluation using your key. Run DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula. The server restarts and returns licensed.
  5. On retail or volume media, install the key instead. Run slmgr /ipk followed by slmgr /ato.
  6. Verify. Run slmgr /xpr, or slmgr /dlv for the longer report.

A server already running as a domain controller cannot be converted. Demote it, convert, then promote it again. Where there is no internet connection, install the key and run slui 4 for phone activation, covered in our Confirmation ID guide.

Check that it worked

Two commands and one settings page confirm the server is licensed.

  • slmgr /xpr reports the machine as permanently activated.
  • DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition now says ServerStandard, with no Eval.
  • Settings, System, Activation shows Windows Server 2022 Standard as activated.
  • The evaluation countdown is gone from the desktop and from sign-in.

Common errors and how to fix them

The codes we see on Windows Server 2022, and what clears them.

0xC004F069: this is an evaluation edition

Evaluation builds refuse product keys through slmgr, which is exactly what this code reports. Confirm with DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition, and where the answer is ServerStandardEval, run DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:your-key /AcceptEula from an administrator prompt. The server converts in place and restarts, keeping roles, shares and data exactly as they were. The earlier slmgr attempt leaves nothing behind that needs undoing, so you can run the conversion straight away.

0xC004F050, or DISM stops with error 1605

The key and the installed edition disagree, or a character is wrong. Check what is running with DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition, because a Standard key will not activate Datacenter. Use the edition name exactly as Get-TargetEditions prints it, and type the twenty-five characters by hand rather than pasting them, since a copied key frequently carries an invisible space at the end.

The edition change is blocked on a domain controller

Active Directory does not allow an edition change on a server holding the domain controller role, so the command reports that the current edition cannot be upgraded. Demote the server, restart it, run the DISM Set-Edition command with your key, then promote it again. Where this is the only domain controller you have, back it up first and pick a quiet window for the work.

0xC004C003: the key is blocked or already used

Microsoft reports this when a key has reached its activation limit or has been blocked at their end. Leave it a few minutes, run slmgr /ato again, and check that the same key is not live on another server already. If the code keeps returning, contact us with it. Our 180-day money-back guarantee covers a replacement key, or a refund if we cannot get the server activated.

0xC004F074: the activation service cannot be reached

The server is trying to reach a KMS host that is not answering, which often happens on a network that used to have one. Clear the cached host with slmgr /ckms, then run slmgr /ato to go to Microsoft directly. Check the connection, the system clock and any proxy as well. For a server with no internet, install the key with slmgr /ipk and use slui 4, which our Confirmation ID guide explains.

Windows Server 2022 download questions

What customers ask us before ordering this key.

Where is the official Windows Server 2022 download?

The Microsoft Evaluation Center has the Windows Server 2022 ISO, free, behind a short registration form. That one image holds Standard and Datacenter and installs either of them as Server Core, which has no graphical shell, or Desktop Experience. Choosing the edition at setup is what matters here, because your key is tied to Standard. Microsoft no longer promotes 2022 as the current release, so the page sits alongside the Windows Server 2025 one, and the link above goes to the right version.

How long is Windows Server 2022 supported?

Mainstream support for Windows Server 2022 runs to October 13, 2026, and extended support, which is security updates without new features, runs to October 14, 2031. That makes it a sensible choice for a server you plan to keep for a few more years, particularly where an application vendor has not certified anything newer. If you would rather start on the longer runway, Windows Server 2025 is supported into 2029 and 2034, and our Windows Server 2025 Standard guide covers it.

Can I license an evaluation server without reinstalling?

Yes. Where DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition returns ServerStandardEval, run DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard with your key and /AcceptEula from an administrator prompt. Everything on the server stays where it is: roles, shares, settings and installed applications. It restarts once or twice and comes back as licensed Standard, usually inside ten minutes. The one blocker is a server already promoted to a domain controller, since Active Directory refuses the edition change, so demote it, convert it, then promote it again on the licensed build.

What does this license cover, and what is not included?

It licenses the Windows Server 2022 Standard operating system on one server, on the usual per-core basis: every physical core counted, a minimum of 16 per server and 8 per processor. Standard includes the right to run two virtualized instances of Windows Server, and each of those still needs activating. More virtual machines means Datacenter, which our Windows Server 2022 Datacenter license covers. Client Access Licenses for the users or devices connecting to the server are separate and not included.
