How to download, install and activate Windows Server 2022 Datacenter

The Windows Server 2022 Datacenter download is a free ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center. Install Datacenter, then apply your key to turn the 180-day evaluation into a licensed host, with the roles and virtual machines on it left untouched. Budget 30 to 60 minutes for a new build.

Before you start

Most of the trouble we see comes from installing the wrong edition or the wrong year, so check both.

  • Your license key. Twenty-five characters, emailed in minutes and stored in your account.
  • Datacenter and 2022. This key does not activate Standard, and it does not activate Server 2025.
  • Your physical core count. Cores are counted per server, with a minimum of 16.
  • Boot media or a hypervisor. An empty 8 GB USB drive, or Hyper-V, VMware or Proxmox.
  • A backup. A clean install wipes the disk you point it at.
RequirementMinimum
Processor1.4 GHz 64-bit (x64) with NX, DEP, CMPXCHG16b, SSE4.2 and POPCNT support
Memory512 MB for Server Core, 2 GB for Desktop Experience, plus the guests
Disk space32 GB for the host, and considerably more for virtual machines
NetworkEthernet adapter
FirmwareUEFI with Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 for the secured-core features
Step 1

Download the Windows Server 2022 ISO

Microsoft publishes the media at no cost, and the same image serves both editions. Each installs as Server Core, which has no graphical interface, or as Desktop Experience with the full desktop.

  1. Open the Windows Server 2022 Evaluation Center page. The button above goes to Microsoft, which is where the media belongs.
  2. Take the ISO. The VHD and the Azure download on that page serve other scenarios.
  3. Fill in the registration details. Name, company, email, phone and country, then the download runs.
  4. Select the language. This sets the language the host installs in.
  5. File the ISO somewhere you will find it. It rebuilds any 2022 host you have licensed.

The 2022 and 2025 pages sit next to each other on Microsoft’s site. Your key is tied to 2022, so check the heading before you download.

Step 2

Install Windows Server 2022 Datacenter

The install runs itself once it starts. The edition list is the screen worth slowing down for.

  1. Create boot media or mount the ISO. An 8 GB USB drive for bare metal, a virtual DVD for a guest.
  2. Boot the host from that media. Use the one-time boot menu if it skips past.
  3. Confirm language, time and keyboard, then choose Install now. Setup opens with those three questions.
  4. Choose Windows Server 2022 Datacenter. Desktop Experience for a desktop, the plain entry for Server Core. A Standard install will not take this key.
  5. Accept the terms, choose Custom and select the disk. Files copy across and the host restarts once or twice.
  6. Set the Administrator password. On evaluation media a 180-day clock now runs.

On a host built purely for virtual machines, Server Core is the leaner option and is managed from Windows Admin Center or PowerShell remoting.

Step 3

Activate Windows Server 2022 Datacenter

Evaluation media is converted with DISM. Any other media takes the key through slmgr or the Activation page in Settings.

  1. Open an administrator prompt. Command Prompt or PowerShell, started with Run as administrator.
  2. Read the installed edition. Run DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition. ServerDatacenterEval points to the conversion below.
  3. Check the target editions. Run DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions and confirm ServerDatacenter is offered.
  4. Convert with your key. Run DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula. The host restarts and returns as licensed Datacenter.
  5. On non-evaluation media, use slmgr. Run slmgr /ipk with your key, then slmgr /ato.
  6. Confirm the state. Run slmgr /xpr for the short answer, slmgr /dlv for detail.

A host promoted to domain controller has to be demoted before it can be converted, then promoted again afterwards. With no internet on the host, install the key and run slui 4 for phone activation, covered in our Confirmation ID guide.

Check that it worked

Three quick checks, and the host is done.

  • slmgr /xpr reports the host as permanently activated.
  • DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition answers ServerDatacenter, with no Eval.
  • Settings, System, Activation shows Windows Server 2022 Datacenter as activated.
  • The evaluation countdown no longer appears at sign-in.

Common errors and how to fix them

The codes customers send us on 2022 hosts, and what settles them.

0xC004F069: the host is running an evaluation edition

Evaluation editions do not take a key through slmgr, and this code is how Windows says so. Run DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition, and where it answers ServerDatacenterEval, convert instead with DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:your-key /AcceptEula from an administrator prompt. The host restarts and comes back licensed, with roles, guests and data all intact. The refused slmgr attempt leaves nothing to clean up.

0xC004F050, or DISM reports error 1605

The key does not match the running edition, or a character is wrong. A Datacenter key will not activate a Standard install, so check the edition first with DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition. Copy the target name exactly as Get-TargetEditions prints it, and type your twenty-five characters by hand, because a pasted key regularly carries a hidden trailing space. If it still fails after that, send us the exact code and we will take a look.

The host refuses to change edition because it is a domain controller

Active Directory blocks edition changes while the server holds that role, so the conversion fails with a message about the current edition. Demote the server to a member server, restart, run the DISM Set-Edition command with your key, then promote it again. Back it up beforehand and choose a quiet window if it is the only domain controller in the domain.

0xC004C003: the key is blocked or has been used

Microsoft returns this when the key has reached its activation limit or has been blocked at their end. Wait a few minutes, run slmgr /ato again, and check the key is not already activated on another host. If it stays blocked, send us the code. A key we cannot get working is replaced under our 180-day money-back guarantee, or refunded.

0xC004F074: no activation service answered

The host is looking for a KMS server that is not there, which is common where one existed in the past. Clear the stored host with slmgr /ckms, then run slmgr /ato so the request goes to Microsoft. Check the network, the system clock and any proxy while you are at it. On an isolated host, install the key with slmgr /ipk and activate by phone using slui 4, as our Confirmation ID guide describes.

Windows Server 2022 Datacenter questions

What people ask us before buying this license.

Where is the Windows Server 2022 Datacenter download?

At the Microsoft Evaluation Center, free, after a short registration form. Datacenter has no separate installer: the Windows Server 2022 ISO carries Standard and Datacenter together, and the edition is chosen during setup, as Server Core with no graphical shell or as Desktop Experience. Make sure you are on the 2022 page rather than the 2025 one, since the media and the keys do not cross over. We only ever point customers at Microsoft for the image itself, because an ISO from a file host can carry changes nobody will notice until the host is in production.

What does Datacenter add over Standard on Server 2022?

The virtualization rights are the main difference. Standard covers two virtualized instances of Windows Server on a licensed host, while Datacenter covers as many as the hardware can run. Datacenter also brings Storage Spaces Direct, software-defined networking and shielded virtual machines, which Standard does not have. If the host will carry two virtual machines and nothing more exotic, the Windows Server 2022 Standard license is the cheaper fit. Install and activation are identical either way, so the decision is purely about what the host has to do.

How long will Windows Server 2022 keep getting updates?

Mainstream support ends on October 13, 2026, and extended support, meaning security updates without new features, runs to October 14, 2031. A 2022 host bought now therefore has years of patching ahead of it, which suits estates where an application vendor has certified 2022 and nothing newer. If you want the longer horizon, Windows Server 2025 runs into 2029 and 2034, and our Windows Server 2025 Standard guide covers that route. Either way the license you buy from us stays with the server for its working life.

Do the guests need keys, and are CALs included?

Each Windows Server guest still has to be activated, even on a Datacenter host with unlimited virtualization rights, and Automatic Virtual Machine Activation is the neat way to handle it because the guests activate against the licensed host. Licensing itself counts physical cores, with a minimum of 16 per server and 8 per processor, so a larger host needs more coverage. Client Access Licenses for connecting users or devices are separate and are not part of this key. Tell us your processor and socket count and we will confirm what the host needs.
