How to download, install and activate Windows 10 Pro N
The Windows 10 Pro N download comes from Microsoft at microsoft.com/software-download/windows10, but you have to pick the N edition rather than the default one. Install it, then open Settings, Update and Security, Activation and enter the key from your order email. A Pro N key only activates N media, so the edition you choose at download time decides whether activation works.

Before you start
Two things first. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, so there are no more security updates unless the PC is enrolled in the paid Extended Security Updates program. It still suits a PC that fails the Windows 11 hardware check or is tied to old drivers. And N editions ship without Windows Media Player and the related media technologies.
- Your key is in the order email. It arrives in minutes with the download link, and sits in your account here.
- N keys need N media. A Pro N key will not activate ordinary Windows 10 Pro, and the reverse fails too. Mixing them gives 0xC004F050.
- Plan for the Media Feature Pack. Playback and some apps need it. Step 2 covers it.

Download Windows 10 Pro N from Microsoft
The N image sits on the same Microsoft page as the ordinary one, but it is not the default. Accept the recommended options and you get standard Windows 10, and your Pro N key will be refused. Clear that tick box and pick the N edition.
- Open the Microsoft page. Nothing on it asks for a product key.
- Start the Media Creation Tool, or take the ISO. Either route can produce N media.
- Clear Use the recommended options. Until you clear it the edition list stays greyed out.
- Choose the N edition in the Edition list. Usually shown as Windows 10 N. If the tool does not offer it, use the download link in your order email.
- Let the download finish. Keep the PC awake until the media is ready.
If the PC already runs an N edition and you only need to enter a key, skip to Step 3.
Install Windows 10 Pro N and add the Media Feature Pack
The install is ordinary. The difference is the tidy-up afterwards: an N edition has no media playback components, so video, audio and a fair number of apps stay broken until the Media Feature Pack is added.
- Boot from the USB stick. Restart and tap the boot menu key, usually F12 or Esc.
- Pick language and keyboard, then Install now. Choose I do not have a product key.
- Select Windows 10 Pro N in the edition list. Plain Pro here is the usual reason an N key is later refused.
- Choose Upgrade or Custom, then wait. Custom wipes the partition you select. Two or three reboots follow.
- Add the Media Feature Pack. Settings, Apps, Optional features, Add a feature, Media Feature Pack.
- Restart the PC. Media playback works from here.
If the Media Feature Pack is not listed under Optional features, Microsoft publishes it as a separate download. Email us and we will point you at the right one.
Activate Windows 10 Pro N with your key
Windows 10 activation sits in the older Settings layout, under Update and Security rather than System. Get the PC online first.
- Open Settings. Press the Windows key and I together.
- Go to Update and Security, then Activation. Check the edition line reads Pro N before going further.
- Click Change product key. On a PC never activated before you may see Activate instead.
- Paste the 25-character key. Copy it from the order email. Dashes are added for you.
- Click Next, then Activate. Allow a minute for the servers to answer.
- Read the result. It should say Windows is activated with a digital license.

Check that it worked
Two minutes of checking now saves a support call later.
- The edition line says Windows 10 Pro N. Without the N you are on the wrong media and the key will be refused.
- Activation reads activated. With a digital license, or one linked to your Microsoft account.
- The desktop watermark is gone. The Activate Windows text disappears after a restart.
- A video file plays. If not, the Media Feature Pack has not installed yet.

0xC004F050: the product key is not valid
On an N key this nearly always means the PC is running the ordinary edition. Read the edition line in Settings, Update and Security, Activation: if it says Windows 10 Pro with no N, the key cannot activate it. Reinstall from N media, picking Windows 10 Pro N. There is no in-place switch between N and non-N. A mistyped character gives the same error.
Video and audio do not play, or an app reports a missing codec
Normal on a fresh N install rather than a fault. N editions ship without Windows Media Player and the media playback components. Open Settings, Apps, Optional features, Add a feature, then install the Media Feature Pack and restart. Video calling apps, some browsers and several editing tools depend on those components too, so add it before deciding something is broken.
0xC004C003: the server says the key is in use
The key has already been activated elsewhere, or it has been blocked. Nothing on the PC fixes this, and reinstalling will not help. Check that you copied the key exactly, with no character missing at the end, then email contact@officegsm.com with your order number. We look it up and send a replacement, and if we cannot get you activated the 180-day guarantee means your money back.
0xC004F074: Windows cannot reach the activation servers
A connection problem rather than a key problem. Confirm the PC is online, then check the date, time and time zone, because a clock that is days out will break the secure handshake. Pause any VPN or proxy and try again. Leftover KMS settings from a company network cause this too. If it persists, run slui 4 and activate by telephone.

What is the difference between Windows 10 Pro and Pro N?
Feature for feature they are the same system. The N editions exist because of a European Commission ruling, and they ship without Windows Media Player and the related playback technologies. Everything else, including BitLocker, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V and domain join, is identical to ordinary Pro. Install the Media Feature Pack from Settings, Apps, Optional features and the two editions behave the same from then on. Licensing stays separate, though, so an N key needs N media and an ordinary key needs ordinary media.
Can I use a Pro N key on ordinary Windows 10 Pro?
No. Activation checks the edition, and N and non-N count as different editions, so an N key on standard Pro returns 0xC004F050, and the reverse fails the same way. There is no in-place switch: moving from one to the other means a reinstall from the right media, which is why the edition you pick at download time matters. If you have already installed the wrong one, tell us before you reinstall. Buying the matching Windows 10 Pro key is sometimes the quicker fix.
Do I have to install the Media Feature Pack?
Not strictly, but most people should. Without it there is no Windows Media Player, no built-in media playback, and applications that lean on those components can misbehave in ways that look unrelated, including video calls, some browsers and editing tools. It installs in a couple of minutes from Settings, Apps, Optional features, Add a feature, and it needs one restart. If the PC is a locked-down kiosk or a server-style workstation with no media use at all, leaving it out is a reasonable choice.
Will my Windows 10 Pro N key activate Windows 11 Pro N?
Yes, on hardware that meets the Windows 11 requirements, and the same N rule applies: the key activates Windows 11 Pro N, not ordinary Windows 11 Pro. You download Windows 11 from Microsoft, clear the recommended options, pick the N edition again, install it and enter the same key in Settings, System, Activation.
