How to download, install and activate Windows 10 Pro for Workstations
On a PC already running Windows 10 Pro there is nothing to download: open Settings, Update and Security, Activation, click Change product key and enter your key. Windows switches edition and restarts, about ten minutes, with your files and programs left alone. Only a machine that needs Windows 10 installing from scratch uses Microsoft download page first.

Before you start
Two minutes of checking here saves a wasted evening.
- The PC must be on Windows 10 Pro. The edition change runs from Pro only. Home has to become Pro first.
- There is no Workstations installer. One Windows 10 image, and the key picks the edition.
- Nothing gets erased on an edition change. Files, programs and accounts survive.
- Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. No more security updates. Worth deciding before you install.
- Have the key and a connection ready. It arrives by email minutes after ordering.
| Requirement | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster, 64-bit, up to 4 physical processors |
| Memory | 2 GB minimum, supported to 6 TB |
| Storage | 32 GB or larger drive |
| Graphics | DirectX 9 or later with a WDDM 1.0 driver |
| Display | 800 x 600 or higher |
| Also needed | Internet for activation, plus an 8 GB USB drive for a clean install |
Download Windows 10 (only if you need media)
Most customers skip this step entirely, because an edition change needs no download at all.
- Skip this step if the PC already runs Windows 10 Pro. There is no separate Pro for Workstations installer. The edition change is done from Settings with your key.
- Otherwise open Microsoft Windows 10 download page. Go to microsoft.com/software-download/windows10 for the Media Creation Tool and the ISO.
- Choose the Media Creation Tool for a USB installer. Create installation media writes a bootable installer to a spare 8 GB drive, erasing it.
- Or take the ISO to mount or write yourself. One image holds Home and Pro. Install Pro, then change edition with your key.
If Microsoft has retired that page by the time you read this, the link in your order email covers the same media. Our other Windows 10 licenses use the same route.
Switch edition or install Windows 10 Pro for Workstations
Two paths. Path A is the one nearly everybody uses.
Path A: change edition from Windows 10 Pro
- Confirm the PC is on Windows 10 Pro. Settings, System, About shows the edition. Home has to become Pro first.
- Open Settings, Update and Security, Activation. Click Change product key and enter your Pro for Workstations key.
- Let Windows switch edition and restart. Files, programs, printers and user accounts are untouched. It takes about ten minutes.
Path B: clean install, then change edition
- Back up first. A clean install erases the drive you select.
- Boot from the USB installer. Press the boot menu key as the logo appears, often F12, F11 or Esc.
- Install Windows 10 Pro. Click I do not have a product key and pick Pro from the edition list.
- Then change edition to Pro for Workstations. Once at the desktop, enter your key on the Activation page as in Path A.
ReFS volumes are created after the edition change, from Disk Management. Do not reformat the Windows drive as ReFS: Windows itself has to sit on NTFS.
Activate Windows 10 Pro for Workstations
A minute, once the PC can reach Microsoft.
- Get the PC online. A key cannot be checked offline.
- Open Settings, Update and Security, Activation. Windows 10 keeps activation here, not under System where Windows 11 moved it.
- Click Change product key and type your key. The 25 character key is in your order email. Then Next and Activate.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account on the same page. Windows stores a digital license against the account, so the troubleshooter can restore it after a hardware change.
If online activation fails twice, phone activation still works: press the Windows key and R, then type slui 4. Our Confirmation ID walkthrough shows each screen.
Check that it worked
Back to Settings, Update and Security, Activation. Three signs it worked.
- Activation state reads Active. The line underneath names a digital license or a product key.
- The edition reads Pro for Workstations. Settings, System, About should say Windows 10 Pro for Workstations.
- ReFS appears when formatting a spare drive. Disk Management offers it alongside NTFS on a non-system disk.
Common errors and how to fix them
Five codes cover almost every ticket we open on this edition.
0xC004F050: the product key is not valid
Usually the edition rather than the key. The Workstations upgrade only runs from Windows 10 Pro, so entering the key in Home or in an Enterprise or LTSC build gets refused. Check Settings, System, About and read the edition line first. If it already says Pro, install every pending update, restart and retype the key by hand rather than pasting it, since a stray space at the end is a common cause.
0x803FA067: Windows could not be upgraded
The edition change started and stopped, normally because servicing files are out of date or a previous update is half applied. Install everything waiting in Windows Update, restart, then try Change product key again. If it still stops, run the built-in troubleshooter at Settings, Update and Security, Troubleshoot, Windows Update, restart once more and retry. That clears it in most cases without touching your files.
0xC004C003: the activation server says the key is blocked
The server refuses the key, normally because it has already been activated on another machine. Nothing on the PC fixes this and reinstalling Windows does not clear it. Check the key character by character against your order email, then email contact@officegsm.com with your order number. We look it up and send a replacement, and the 180-day guarantee covers a refund if we cannot get you activated.
0xC004F074: Windows cannot reach the activation servers
The connection rather than the key. Confirm the PC is online, then check the date, time and time zone, because a clock that is days out breaks the secure handshake. Pause any VPN or proxy and try Activate again. Leftover KMS settings from a company image cause this too. If it keeps failing, press the Windows key and R, type slui 4 and follow our Confirmation ID guide.
0xC004C008: the key is already in use on another device
One key activates one PC, so this appears when the key has been used elsewhere, or when the motherboard was replaced and Windows sees a new computer. On the same machine after a rebuild, open Settings, Update and Security, Activation, run the Activation troubleshooter and choose I changed hardware on this device recently. A genuinely second workstation needs its own key.
Windows 10 Pro for Workstations download questions
What customers ask us most.
How do I upgrade Windows 10 Pro to Pro for Workstations?
From Settings, in about ten minutes, with nothing to download. Open Settings, Update and Security, Activation, click Change product key and enter your Windows 10 Pro for Workstations key. Windows verifies it, switches the edition and restarts once. Nothing is erased: documents, installed programs, printers and user accounts stay exactly as they were, and afterwards Settings, System, About reads Windows 10 Pro for Workstations. If the PC is on Windows 10 Home, it has to become Pro first, because the edition change only runs from Pro.
What does Pro for Workstations add over Windows 10 Pro?
Four things, all aimed at heavy hardware. It supports up to four physical processors and 6 TB of memory, against two processors and 2 TB in ordinary Pro. It can format volumes with ReFS, the resilient file system that detects and repairs data corruption. It supports SMB Direct for very fast file transfer over RDMA network cards, and it recognises persistent memory modules so data survives a reboot. On a normal desktop none of that is used, which is why a standard Pro key suits most people better.
Where do I download Windows 10 Pro for Workstations?
There is no separate download, and that surprises people. Microsoft ships one Windows 10 image, and your product key decides which edition it becomes. So if the machine already runs Windows 10 Pro, you download nothing at all and simply enter the key. If it needs installing from scratch, take the Media Creation Tool or the ISO from microsoft.com/software-download/windows10, install Windows 10 Pro, then change edition with your key. Sites offering a dedicated Workstations ISO are repackaging that same image.
Windows 10 support ended. Is this still worth buying?
Windows 10 stopped receiving security updates on October 14, 2025, so it depends on the machine. It still makes sense for a workstation that is offline, that runs instrument or rendering software with no Windows 11 build, or that has to stay on a validated configuration. For anything connected to the internet day to day we would point you at Windows 11 Pro instead, and Windows 11 has its own Pro for Workstations edition if you need ReFS and the higher limits.
