How to download, install and activate Microsoft Project 2021 Professional
The Microsoft Project Professional 2021 download is the link in the OfficeGSM order email that carries your key, and it puts Project on Windows 10 or 11. Open Project afterwards and use File, Account, Change Product Key to enter the 25-character key. Set aside 15 to 25 minutes, and ignore setup.office.com.

Before you start
This is a single-app volume license for one Windows PC. Work down this list before you start the installer.
- The bit version has to match your Office. Setup stops rather than mixing 64-bit and 32-bit on one machine.
- Support ends October 13, 2026. Project 2024 Professional runs to October 9, 2029 if you need longer.
- A Microsoft 365 subscription staying put? Contact us before installing. The two share an update engine.
- No account redemption. The key goes into Project itself, under File, Account.
- Windows 10 or 11 only. Microsoft has never made a Mac version of Project.

Download Microsoft Project 2021 Professional
Both supported routes come from Microsoft. The first is the right one for a single computer.
- Begin with your order email. The Microsoft Project 2021 download link sits next to the 25-character key and reaches you within minutes of paying.
- Or deploy with the Office Deployment Tool. Take the tool from Microsoft, write a configuration.xml with the Product ID ProjectPro2021Volume and run setup.exe /configure configuration.xml. We send the file over if you ask.
- Nothing here is redeemed at setup.office.com. That page belongs to retail Home and Student style licenses. A volume key typed into it comes back rejected.
- Decide on the build before you download. File, Account, About in any Office app reports 64-bit or 32-bit. Project 2021 has to be the same.

Install Project 2021 on Windows 10 or 11
A standard Click-to-Run install. Nothing to configure, and no restart at the end.
- Close every Office window. The Office installer engine is shared, so one open Word document or Outlook window is enough to stall setup.
- Launch the installer and allow it past Windows. No choices come up. You get a progress window that closes by itself when it is finished.
- Expect fifteen to twenty-five minutes. Everything streams down from Microsoft, so a slower line takes longer.
- Open Project once and accept the terms. The template screen appears with Blank Project first. No license has been applied yet.
Plans from Project 2016 and 2019 open unchanged, and an .mpp file saved here goes back to colleagues on those versions without conversion.
Activate Project 2021 with your product key
The last minute of the job, and it happens inside the app rather than in a browser.
- Open Project, then File, then Account. Account is the last entry in the left column. It names the product and says whether it is activated.
- Choose Change Product Key. A Sign in prompt on its own means you are on the wrong dialog. Close it: no Microsoft account is involved.
- Type in the 25-character key from the order email. Pasting is safest. The dashes appear on their own and lower case is fine.
- Press Activate, then reopen Project. Microsoft checks the key and the answer shows on screen. Restarting refreshes what Account reports.

Check that it worked
Return to File, Account. Three signs say the license went on properly.
- Product Activated under the product name. No trial countdown and no Buy now button.
- The name reads Project Professional 2021. Standard there means the wrong build went on.
- Resource Pool sits on the Resource tab. That menu is the quickest proof you have Professional.
Common errors and how to fix them
These five messages cover nearly every Project 2021 ticket that reaches us, and each has a fix you can do yourself.
0xC004C020: the activation limit for this key has been reached
The online check has been declined and the key wants telephone activation instead, which is an ordinary path for a volume key. Project offers a phone wizard: pick a country, call the automated Microsoft line, read the Installation ID aloud and type back the Confirmation ID. The installer stops because of the Office already on the PC
Two causes, and both come down to matching. A 32-bit Office cannot host 64-bit Project, and a Microsoft 365 install on another update channel can block setup outright. Read File, Account, About in Word and install the Project build that matches. 30015-25 or 30038-25 partway through the install
Another Office product is in the way, most often a trial that shipped with the computer. Remove it under Settings, Apps, reboot, then run the Project installer again. Where an entry will not uninstall properly, Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant clears what is left. Send us a list of what is on the machine and we will work out the order for you.
Project shows an Unlicensed Product strip above the ribbon
The app is installed but no key has reached it. Open File, Account, Change Product Key and type the key from your order email again. If the strip survives a restart, run Update Options, Update Now from the same page and reopen Project. A computer that has been off the internet for a long stretch also shows this until it checks in once.
The product key you entered is not valid, or 0xC004C060
Nearly always a wrong app or a wrong character. A Project Professional 2021 key works in Project Professional 2021 and nowhere else, so Project Standard, Project 2019 and Word all turn it down. Compare it with the order email one character at a time. If it is right and Project still refuses, send us the order number: we check it, replace the key, or refund you under the 180-day guarantee.

Where is the Microsoft Project 2021 download?

Professional also connects to Project Server or Project Online, so a schedule can live centrally instead of as a file on one desktop. Standard is enough for one planner keeping their own plans. The moment colleagues share people or a server, Professional is the version you need.
Should I buy Project 2021 or Project 2024?
The support date usually decides it. Project 2021 has security updates until October 13, 2026, while Project 2024 Professional at $13.50 carries on to October 9, 2029. Project 2021 at $8.99 is the sensible pick on a PC already running Office 2021, or for a defined piece of work that will be finished well before that date comes around. Can Project 2021 share a PC with Office?
Yes, provided the bit versions agree. Project 2021 was designed alongside Office 2021, the pair install together without trouble, and an Office 2024 machine accepts it as well, though Office 2024 Professional Plus is a more natural partner for Project 2024. The one thing to watch is a live Microsoft 365 subscription on the same computer: the shared update engine means an install can break one side.
