Windows 8.1 Product Keys: Licensing the Forgotten Windows
Windows 8.1 had a short life between Windows 7 and Windows 10, and it was never loved, but a surprising number of machines still run it. Touchscreen laptops from 2013 and 2014, all-in-one PCs, small business terminals, and industrial equipment that was certified on 8.1 and never re-certified. Windows 8.1 (Core) vs Windows 8.1 Pro
Microsoft dropped the "Home" name for this generation; the consumer edition is simply Windows 8.1, often called Core. It includes the modern Start screen, the desktop, Windows Defender, Storage Spaces and File History. Windows 8.1 Pro adds the business set: BitLocker, domain join, Group Policy, Remote Desktop host, Hyper-V (Client Hyper-V made its debut here) and the Encrypting File System. If the PC was originally a business machine, or you want Hyper-V or BitLocker, buy the Pro key. For a personal touchscreen laptop, Core is enough.

Things to Know Before You Order
- Windows 8 and 8.1 keys are not interchangeable. A Windows 8 key does not activate Windows 8.1 media and vice versa. Everything in this category is for 8.1, which is the version you should install anyway; 8.0 lost support in 2016.
- The key is architecture-neutral. The same key activates the 32-bit or the 64-bit installer of its edition.
- Upgrading later. Microsoft stopped accepting Windows 8.1 keys for Windows 10 and 11 activation in 2023. If the hardware qualifies and you want a modern Windows, a Windows 10 key is the straightforward route.
- Security. No new patches are published. Keep the machine off the open internet, or behind a firewall, and use it for the task it was kept for.
