How to upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro and activate your key

There is nothing to download for this one. On a PC already running Windows 11 Home you open Settings, System, Activation, choose Upgrade your edition of Windows and enter the key from your order email. Windows swaps the edition in place in about ten minutes, restarts once, and leaves your files, programs and accounts exactly where they are.

Before you start

This is an edition change, not a reinstall, so the checklist is short. Most of it is confirming which edition the PC is on right now.

  • Check the edition you have. Settings, System, About. Edition under Windows specifications needs to read Windows 11 Home or Home Single Language.
  • Have the key from your order email. It arrives within minutes of payment and also sits in your account on our site.
  • Stay plugged in and online. Windows pulls a small edition package from Microsoft during the switch.
  • Write down your device encryption recovery key. If encryption is on, save it from your Microsoft account before the restart.
  • Close your work first. The PC restarts once on its own at the end of the upgrade.

Step 1

Download: usually nothing at all

People search for a Windows 11 Pro upgrade download and there is not one. Pro and Home ship inside the same installation files, and the key decides which edition runs. You only need a Microsoft download page if the PC is not on Windows 11 yet.

  1. Already on Windows 11 Home? Skip to Step 2. No ISO, no Media Creation Tool, no USB drive.
  2. Still on Windows 10? Run the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from the page above to reach Windows 11 Home first, then come back here.
  3. Want a clean install instead? Create installation media from the same page and choose Windows 11 Pro during setup.

A clean install wipes the drive you select. Our Windows 11 Pro guide covers that route step by step.

Step 2

Install: get the PC ready for the edition change

Nothing is installed by hand here. This step makes sure Windows can reach Microsoft and that the edition switch has room to work.

  1. Run Windows Update first. Settings, Windows Update, Check for updates. An out-of-date Home installation is the usual reason the switch stalls.
  2. Free up a little space. Aim for 10 GB free on the system drive. The package is small, but the servicing step needs room.
  3. Pause third-party security software. Some suites block the licensing service during an edition change.
  4. Sign in with an administrator account. Settings, Accounts, Your info shows Administrator under your name.

Nothing is uninstalled and no reset happens. If anything asks you to format or reset the PC to get Pro, stop and email us.

Step 3

Activate: turn Home into Windows 11 Pro

This is the whole upgrade. Enter the key, wait for the switch, restart, done.

  1. Open the Activation page. Settings, System, Activation. You will see Activation state and an Upgrade your edition of Windows section.
  2. Click Change product key. It sits under Upgrade your edition of Windows. Select Change.
  3. Paste the key from your order email. Type or paste all 25 characters. Dashes are added for you. Click Next, then Start.
  4. If Home refuses the key, use the generic upgrade key first. Your order email includes a generic Windows 11 Pro upgrade key. Enter that to flip the edition to Pro, let the PC restart, then return to Change product key and enter your own key.
  5. Let the PC restart. Windows applies the edition, restarts once and signs you back in as Pro.
  6. Confirm activation. Settings, System, Activation should read Windows is activated with a digital license.

If activation fails with a server message, use telephone activation. Run slui 4, pick your country, call the number Microsoft shows and enter the Confirmation ID. Our Confirmation ID guide walks through every screen.

Check that it worked

Two screens tell you everything. Give it a minute after the restart.

  • Settings, System, About. Edition reads Windows 11 Pro next to Windows specifications.
  • Settings, System, Activation. Activation state reads Windows is activated.
  • Pro features appear. BitLocker, Hyper-V, Remote Desktop host and Group Policy Editor appear in Start menu search.
  • Your files are untouched. Desktop, Documents, programs and browser profiles are where you left them.

Common errors and how to fix them

These four cover almost every message we see on this upgrade. If yours is not here, send us a screenshot.

0xC004F050: the product key entered did not work

Windows rejects the key because the edition does not match what it expects, and on an upgrade that nearly always means the PC is not on Windows 11 Home. Check Settings, System, About first. If it reads Windows 10 Home, move to Windows 11 with the Installation Assistant before entering the key. If it reads Home and the key is still refused, enter the generic Pro upgrade key from your order email, restart, then enter your own.

0xC004C003: the activation server determined the key is blocked

The key has been used more times than its license allows, or Microsoft has flagged it, and that is not something you can fix from the PC. Email contact@officegsm.com with your order number and a screenshot and we issue a replacement, normally the same day. Our 180-day money-back guarantee covers this, so if the replacement cannot be activated either you get your money back.

Upgrade your edition of Windows is missing from Activation

That section only shows on an edition Windows can upgrade, so a PC already on Pro, Enterprise or Education will not display it. Check Settings, System, About. If it already reads Windows 11 Pro you do not need the edition change at all, just enter your key under Change product key. If About reads Windows 11 Home and the option is still missing, install pending updates and restart.

0xC004F074: Windows cannot reach the activation servers

The licensing service could not get out to Microsoft, and a work laptop behind a VPN or a proxy is the usual cause. Disconnect the VPN, check that the clock and time zone in Settings, Time and language are right, then try again. If it still fails, press Windows and R, run slui 4 and use telephone activation. Our Confirmation ID guide shows each screen.

Windows 11 Home to Pro upgrade questions

What our support inbox asks most about this upgrade.

Will I lose my files when I upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro?

No. This is an in-place edition change, so Windows swaps the edition while everything else stays put. Your documents, photos, installed programs, browser profiles, printers and user accounts all survive, and you sign back in to the same desktop after one restart. Nothing is formatted and nothing is reset. We still suggest a backup of anything irreplaceable before a licensing change. The only visible difference afterwards is the edition name in Settings and the Pro features that appear, such as BitLocker and Hyper-V.

Do I need to download anything to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro?

Not on a PC already running Windows 11 Home. Home and Pro ship inside the same installation files, and the key tells Windows which edition to run, so the upgrade happens entirely inside Settings. Windows does fetch a small edition package from Microsoft during the switch, which is why the PC needs to stay online. You only visit a Microsoft download page if the computer is still on Windows 10: move it to Windows 11 first, then apply the Pro key.

Can I use this key on a Windows 10 Home PC?

This key is for the Windows 11 Home to Pro edition change, so the PC needs to be on Windows 11 Home when you enter it. If your computer is on Windows 10 Home and meets the Windows 11 requirements, run the Installation Assistant from Microsoft to move it to Windows 11 Home at no cost, then apply the key. If the hardware cannot run Windows 11, a straight Windows 11 Pro license is not the answer either, so email us and we will point you at the right product.

What do I get in Pro that Home does not have?

BitLocker drive encryption, Hyper-V for virtual machines, Remote Desktop as the host rather than only the client, the Group Policy Editor, Windows Sandbox, domain and Azure AD join, and higher hardware limits including more RAM and a second physical processor. For most people BitLocker and Remote Desktop are the reasons to move, and businesses need domain join. Everything you already use in Home carries over unchanged, including your apps and settings. You can browse the rest of our Windows 11 licenses if you need keys for other machines.
