How to download, install and activate Office Home and Student 2019
Office 2019 Home and Student is a consumer licence tied to a Microsoft account, so the order is different from our business editions. Redeem the key at setup.office.com, install the apps from account.microsoft.com, and the licence activates as soon as you are signed in. Allow 20 to 40 minutes on Windows 10 or 11.
| Official download | account.microsoft.com, after redeeming at setup.office.com |
|---|---|
| Installer type | Click-to-Run, tied to your Microsoft account |
| Time needed | 20 to 40 minutes |
| Activation | By signing in, not by typing a key into Word |
| Works on | One Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC |
| Free help | Email every day, phone Mon–Fri 9am–6pm ET |
Before you start
Two things before you start. This key is redeemed once and then belongs to the Microsoft account you used, so pick that account carefully. And Microsoft stopped issuing security updates for Office 2019 on October 14, 2025, which is fine for an offline or family machine but worth knowing.
- Decide which Microsoft account to use, because the licence stays attached to it permanently. A personal outlook.com or hotmail.com address is ideal.
- Create the account first if you do not have one, at account.microsoft.com, before touching the key.
- Uninstall any other Office, in Settings, Apps, Installed apps, including Microsoft 365 and preinstalled trials. Then restart.
- Keep your order email open, because the 25-character key is in it and in your account on our site.
- Stay online for the whole process, since redemption and activation both need the internet.
| Requirement | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11 |
| Not supported | Windows 8.1 and older, Chromebook, Linux |
| Apps included | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote |
| Not included | Outlook, Access, Publisher |
| Licensing | One PC, tied to one Microsoft account |
| Security updates | Ended October 14, 2025 (Microsoft lifecycle page) |
Redeem your Office 2019 Home and Student key
Consumer editions are redeemed on a web page before anything is installed, which is the opposite of our volume editions. The key is spent the moment it lands on an account, so use the address you intend to keep.
- Go to setup.office.com in your browser.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account, or create one there if you do not already have one.
- Type the 25-character key from your order email, and check your country and language before continuing.
- Confirm the redemption. Office Home and Student 2019 is now listed against that account for good.
Take a note of which Microsoft account you used. It is the only way back to the installer later, and we cannot move a licence from one account to another once it has been redeemed.
Install Office Home and Student 2019 from your account
The download lives in your Microsoft account rather than in an email link. It is the same Click-to-Run installer Microsoft uses for its retail editions.
- Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in with the same account you just used.
- Open Services and subscriptions. Office Home and Student 2019 should be listed there.
- Click Install. The small setup file downloads in a few seconds.
- Run it and approve the prompt from Windows. The rest of the files come down on their own, so leave the window alone.
- Wait for the message saying you are all set. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote are then in the Start menu.
There is no Outlook in this edition, so do not go looking for it. If you need Outlook on this PC, the Professional Plus editions include it and our Office 2019 Professional Plus guide covers that route.
Activate Office 2019 by signing in
There is no product key to type into Word for this edition, and no telephone activation. The licence follows your Microsoft account, so activation is really just proving who you are.
- Open Word from the Start menu.
- Sign in when prompted, with the same Microsoft account that redeemed the key.
- Accept the licence agreement on the screen that follows.
- Click File, then Account, to see what Office thinks it has.
- Check the panel reads Microsoft Office Home and Student 2019, with your account name underneath.
- Reopen Word once to be sure the licence sticks.
If Word asks for a product key instead of a sign-in, it usually means a different edition of Office is installed on the PC. Uninstall it, restart, and install again from account.microsoft.com.
Check that it worked
Open Word, click File and then Account, and compare what you see with the lines below.
- The product name reads Microsoft Office Home and Student 2019. Anything else means another Office is in charge.
- Your Microsoft account is shown in the top left as the signed-in user.
- No activation banner appears across the top of the window after a restart.
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote all open. Outlook is not part of this edition.
Common errors and how to fix them
The messages our team sees most often on account-bound keys, cause first and fix after. If yours is not here, send us a screenshot.
“This product key has already been used” or “token already redeemed”
The key has landed on a Microsoft account, in most cases one of your own from an earlier attempt. Sign in at account.microsoft.com with every address you might have used and check Services and subscriptions before doing anything else. If it genuinely is not there, email your order number and a screenshot to contact@officegsm.com. We check the key with our supplier and replace it free of charge, usually the same day.
setup.office.com will not accept the key
Nine times out of ten this is a typing slip, so paste the key from the order email rather than reading it off the screen, and check the country and language selections match where you are. If the page still refuses, try a different browser or an incognito window, because a half-signed-in session can block the form. Send us a screenshot of the exact message if it keeps failing and we will look at the key itself.
“We can’t find an Office product to install” at account.microsoft.com
You are almost certainly signed in with a different Microsoft account from the one that redeemed the key. Sign out completely, close the browser, then sign back in with the address you used at setup.office.com. If you have several accounts, check each one under Services and subscriptions. The licence cannot be moved between accounts, so finding the right address is the whole fix here.
Error 30015-25 or 30038-25, or Word shows “Unlicensed Product”
Another Office is already on the PC, and the two cannot share a machine. In Settings, Apps, Installed apps, uninstall every Office and Microsoft 365 entry, including the trial on new laptops, then restart and install again from account.microsoft.com. If Word still says Unlicensed Product afterwards, check you are signed into Word with the account that holds the licence rather than a work address.
Office Home and Student 2019 download questions
Answered by the team that handles our tickets every day.
Where is the official Office Home and Student 2019 download?
It is inside your own Microsoft account rather than in an email. Redeem the key at setup.office.com first, then sign in at account.microsoft.com, open Services and subscriptions and click Install next to Office Home and Student 2019. That downloads Microsoft’s own installer, and the rest of the files follow on their own. The link keeps working for as long as the licence sits on that account, so you can reinstall later on the same PC without asking us for anything.
Does Office Home and Student 2019 include Outlook?
No. This edition is Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote only, which is the usual choice for schoolwork, home paperwork and family machines. Outlook, Access and Publisher are not part of it and cannot be added to it later. If you need email in a desktop app, Office 2019 Professional Plus includes Outlook, Access and Publisher, and our Office 2019 Professional Plus guide explains that installation, which works rather differently from this one because the key is typed into Word instead of being redeemed on a web page.
Can I move Office 2019 Home and Student to another computer?
The licence covers one PC and stays attached to the Microsoft account that redeemed it. If the original machine is retired or rebuilt, sign in at account.microsoft.com on the new one and install from there, and Microsoft usually allows the transfer. What cannot be done is moving the licence to a different Microsoft account, by us or by anyone else, which is why the account you choose at redemption matters so much. Telephone activation does not apply to this edition.
Is Office 2019 still worth installing now that support has ended?
Microsoft stopped shipping security updates on October 14, 2025, so anything found after that date stays unpatched. The apps keep working and the licence does not expire, which is fine for a home machine used for documents and homework, and for anyone who mostly opens files they already have. If this PC handles a lot of email and downloads, Office 2024 is the current perpetual release with security updates to October 2029, and our Office 2024 Professional Plus guide covers it.
