How to download, install and activate Office 2016 Professional Plus

The office 2016 download comes from the link in your order email, not from setup.office.com, because Professional Plus is a volume edition. Run the installer, then open Word and enter your 25-character office 2016 product key under File, Account, Change Product Key. Allow 20 to 40 minutes, most of it downloading.

Before you start

A few minutes of preparation prevents most of the support mail we get about this edition. Clearing the Office already on the PC is the part that matters most.

  • Your 25-character product key. In your order email and in your account on our site.
  • The download link from that email. The only installer that matches a Professional Plus key.
  • No other Office on the PC. Remove older versions and any Microsoft 365 trial through Control Panel, Programs and Features.
  • An administrator account. Setup writes into Program Files, so a standard user account is stopped.
  • About 3 GB of free disk space. Plus room for the installer while it downloads.

Step 1

Start the office 2016 download

This is where most people go wrong. A volume edition is not on setup.office.com, so a key typed there fails. Use the link we email you.

  1. Open your order email. It holds the 25-character office 2016 product key and the download link. Both are also in your account on our site.
  2. Click the download link. Professional Plus is a volume edition, so it is not on setup.office.com. This link is the installer that matches your key.
  3. Pick 32-bit or 64-bit. Choose 64-bit unless an old add-in needs otherwise. Visio or Project added later must match what you pick.
  4. Let the office 2016 download finish. It runs a few hundred megabytes. A part-finished file fails during setup, so leave the browser alone.

The 5 PC version of this license uses the same installer. Only the number of activations on the key is different.

Step 2

Install Office 2016 on your PC

Setup is quiet and mostly unattended. Clear the old Office out, start it, then leave it be. Nothing asks for your key, which is normal.

  1. Uninstall any other Office first. Control Panel, Programs and Features, then remove older Office versions and any Microsoft 365 trial. Skipping this causes error 30015-25.
  2. Right-click the installer, choose Run as administrator. Setup writes into Program Files, so click Yes on the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Leave setup alone while it runs. A progress animation replaces the old wizard. It needs no input, which is why people assume it has frozen.
  4. Stay online until it says you are all set. Setup pulls components down as it goes. Do not restart or sleep the PC, then close the confirmation window.

A 32-bit and a 64-bit install cannot sit side by side. Note which you chose, because Visio and Project have to match it.

Step 3

Activate Office 2016 with your product key

The apps run in a limited mode until a key is accepted. Activation happens inside Word, not on a website, and covers every installed app.

  1. Open Word from the Start menu. Any Office app works, but Word is the quickest way in. A blank document is enough.
  2. Go to File, then Account. File is at the top left. Account sits near the bottom of the list down the left side.
  3. Click Change Product Key. It is under Product Information on the right. If it is missing, close Word, reopen it and look again.
  4. Type the key and click Activate. Dashes are filled in for you and case does not matter. Product Information then reads Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 as activated, and every app is licensed at once.

If activation is refused with 0xC004C020, the key needs telephone activation and a Confirmation ID. That is a normal route for volume keys and still gives you a fully activated copy. Our Confirmation ID guide covers the call, or we will do it with you on the phone.

Check that it worked

Half a minute tells you whether the license landed. If any of these look wrong, the troubleshooting below covers it.

  • File, Account in Word reads “Product Activated” under Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016.
  • No banner above the ribbon asks you to activate or subscribe.
  • You can edit and save a document, with no read-only warning.
  • Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook open the same way, because one key covers them all.

Common errors and how to fix them

The messages customers actually hit, with the cause behind each. If yours is not here, email contact@officegsm.com with a screenshot and your order number.

Error 0xC004C020 when you activate office 2016

The key has reached the number of online activations Microsoft allows it, so the server declines and offers the telephone route instead. Nothing is wrong with the key. Choose phone activation, read out the installation ID and type back the Confirmation ID you are given. Our Confirmation ID guide walks through the call, which takes about five minutes. If the automated line will not issue a code, email contact@officegsm.com with your order number.

Error 30015-25 or 30038-25 during setup

Another copy of Office is still on the PC with its files locked, so the installer stops before it can replace them. Open Control Panel, Programs and Features, and remove every Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 entry, including trials that shipped with the machine. Restart Windows to release anything still held open, then run the installer again. If an entry refuses to uninstall, Microsoft publishes a support and recovery tool on support.microsoft.com that clears the remains.

“Unlicensed Product” or a red banner across the ribbon

The apps installed but no key was accepted, so Office dropped into reduced functionality mode and will not save your edits. Open Word, go to File, Account, Change Product Key and enter the key from your order email. If it already shows as entered, click Reactivate there instead. A PC that has been offline for weeks can show the same banner, and reconnecting then reopening Word clears that case.

Error 0xC004C060, or the key is refused outright

The key does not match the edition installed, which usually means Home and Business or retail media was used instead of Professional Plus. Open File, Account and read the product name at the top. If it does not say Professional Plus 2016, uninstall and download again from the link in your order email rather than anywhere else. If the name is right and the key is still refused, send us the code and your order number.

Office 2016 Professional Plus download questions

What buyers ask us most.

Where is the official office 2016 download?

It is the link in your order email, not setup.office.com. Professional Plus is a volume edition, and volume editions are never published on the consumer redemption site, which is why a key typed there returns an error. Your email carries the installer link and the key together, and the same pair sits in your account on our site. We only link Microsoft files, because installers repackaged by download sites often refuse a genuine key. If your link has expired, email us and we will send a fresh one the same day.

Which apps come with Office 2016 Professional Plus?

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access and Publisher, all as ordinary desktop programs rather than web versions. Professional Plus is the fullest Office 2016 edition, so Access and Publisher are included here even though the Home editions leave them out. Commercial use is covered, so invoicing, client work and business mail through Outlook are all fine. One key licenses the whole set, so there is no separate activation per app, and the files open in later Office versions without conversion.

Is Office 2016 still supported, and should I buy it?

Microsoft ended support for Office 2016 on 14 October 2025. The apps still open, your documents are untouched and the license does not expire, but no further security updates are issued for this version. That suits a machine used offline, a second PC, or anyone who wants a cheap perpetual license behind decent antivirus. If this is your main computer and it handles mail and downloads all day, we would point you at Office 2024 Professional Plus instead, which is still in support.

Can I move the office 2016 product key to another computer?

Yes, as long as it comes off the first one. Uninstall Office 2016 on the old PC through Control Panel, Programs and Features, then install and activate on the new machine with the same key. The license covers one computer at a time, and running it on two at once is what triggers the activation limit. After a few moves expect error 0xC004C020 and the phone route, which still works. For several machines at once, the 5 PC pack is cheaper.
