How to download, install and activate Microsoft Word 2024
Your Microsoft Word product key arrives in the OfficeGSM order email next to the download link, and that link installs Word 2024 on Windows 10 or 11. Before you start
Word 2024 on its own is a single-app volume license. Five minutes here saves a reinstall later.
- This is Word by itself. No Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook. The suite is Office 2024 Professional Plus at $14.95.
- Your key is not redeemed at setup.office.com. It goes into Word itself, under File, Account.
- Match the bit version of any Office already installed. A 64-bit Office needs 64-bit Word.
- Keeping Microsoft 365 on the same PC? Contact us first. The two share an install engine and the order matters.
- Windows 10 or 11 only. No Mac version, and Windows 7 and 8.1 are not supported.

Download Microsoft Word 2024
Two supported routes, both from Microsoft. Use the first unless you look after several machines.
- Open the order email we sent you. The Microsoft Word 2024 download link sits next to your 25-character key.
- Or install with the Office Deployment Tool. Download the tool from Microsoft, add a configuration.xml naming the app you bought, then run setup.exe /configure configuration.xml. Ask and we send the file ready to use.
- Skip setup.office.com. This is a volume license, so there is nothing to redeem with a Microsoft account. A key typed there gets refused.
- Match the bit version you already run. If Office is on the PC, open any Office app, then File, Account, About and read 64-bit or 32-bit. Word has to match.

Install Word 2024 on Windows 10 or 11
A plain Click-to-Run install with nothing to configure and no restart afterwards.
- Close every Office app first. Word, Excel and Outlook hold files open, and setup stops part way through if one is running.
- Run the installer you downloaded. Double-click it and approve the Windows prompt. There is nothing to choose: the window is just a progress bar.
- Let it finish without touching the PC. Files come down from Microsoft as it goes. Ten to twenty minutes is normal.
- Open Word once when it is done. Accept the license terms so the app reaches its start screen. Nothing is activated yet.
Without local admin rights the install stops at the Windows prompt. Ask whoever looks after the computer to run it for you.
Activate Word 2024 with your product key
Under a minute, and it happens inside Word rather than on a website.
- In Word, click File, then Account. The Account page is at the bottom of the left-hand column, with the product name and license state.
- Click Change Product Key. The button sits under the product name. If you only see Sign in, close that dialog: a Microsoft account is not what activates this key.
- Type the 25-character key from your order email. Paste it if you can. Dashes are added for you and capitals do not matter.
- Click Activate. Word checks the key with Microsoft and confirms it on screen. Close and reopen Word so the Account page refreshes.

Check that it worked
Go back to File, Account in Word. Three things tell you it worked.
- Product Activated appears under the product name. No countdown, no Buy now button.
- The product line names Word 2024. If it names a Microsoft 365 subscription instead, the wrong copy is running.
- No banner across the top of the document window. An Unlicensed Product strip means the key has not taken yet.
Common errors and how to fix them
Five messages cover nearly every Word 2024 ticket we open, and each has a fix you can do yourself.
0xC004C020: the activation limit for this key has been reached
Online activation has been refused and the key now needs telephone activation, which is a normal step for volume keys rather than a fault. Word shows a phone activation wizard: choose your country, call the automated Microsoft line, read out the Installation ID and type in the Confirmation ID it reads back. Our Confirmation ID walkthrough shows every screen. If the wizard does not appear, email us your order number and we go through it with you.
30015-25 or 30038-25: an existing Office is blocking the install
Setup has found another Office installation it cannot sit beside, usually a Microsoft 365 trial that came with the PC or an older Word. Uninstall the other one from Settings, Apps, then restart before trying again. If it will not uninstall cleanly, Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant clears the leftovers. Tell us what the machine already has and we will say what goes first.
A yellow or red Unlicensed Product banner across the top of Word
Word installed but the key never went in, or it went into a different app. Click File, Account, Change Product Key and enter the key from your order email again. If the banner is still there after a restart, check for Office updates on the same Account page, then reopen Word. A machine that has been offline for weeks can also show this until it reaches Microsoft once.
0xC004F074: Word cannot reach the activation servers
The connection rather than the key. Check the PC is online, then look at the date, time and time zone, because a clock that is days out breaks the secure handshake. Pause any VPN, proxy or firewall and try again. If it still fails, use telephone activation and our Confirmation ID guide, which works with no internet on the machine at all.
0xC004C060 or the product key you entered is not valid
Nearly always the key going into the wrong app or a mistyped character. This key activates Word 2024 and nothing else, so entering it in Excel, in an older Word, or in a Home and Student copy gets it turned down. Read it back character by character against the order email. If it matches and Word still refuses, send us your order number: we check the key, replace it, or refund you under the 180-day guarantee.

Do I have to remove Microsoft 365 before installing Word 2024?
If you plan to stop paying the subscription, yes, take it off first: two copies of Word on one PC fight over file associations and over the activation state, and that is where the 30015-25 install error comes from. How long is Word 2024 supported?
Microsoft supports this release with security updates until October 9, 2029. The license itself is perpetual, so Word keeps working after that date, but it stops getting patches, which is the point at which most people move to whatever the current release is. Until then you own it outright: no renewal, no subscription, and the key stays valid on the PC you installed it on. Moving it to a replacement computer is fine as long as it is removed from the old one first.
